PANTHER PROGRESS
MID-January Issue 6
MESSAGE FROM ADMINISTRATION
Lincoln Family -
When a new year starts, everyone always states "HAPPY New Year!" With everything that has been going on with the pandemic and the political unrest, it can be sometimes difficult to insert the word "HAPPY" with a January 1st statement. As we roll into 2021, we have to continue finding the "HAPPY" as we navigate the challenges with our current climate in education. Even though we've been on an emotional roller coaster for the past six months talking about start dates of hybrid and virtual, we know that we have to make safety a priority AND continue to be flexible through this "Sooper Dooper Looper." Based on the most recent FCPS Find Out First shared pertaining to current health metrics, teachers will now return to school on Wednesday, January 27th with STUDENTS that selected hybrid returning on the week of Tuesday, February 16th. Instructional schedules for both hybrid and virtual will change as well. February 3rd and 10th will be asynchronous learning days (details to come). We also know that this could change.
We wanted to thank all the families for providing a response with your intention of HYBRID or FULL VIRTUAL tentatively starting February 16th. As we shared in the past and within the survey itself, there will be class changes based on what you selected. We recognize that this will be challenging for many of us, but we will do our best to minimize the number of changes to make this transition as smooth as it can be. We are currently taking the 614 student surveys and meeting with grade level teachers to strategically make adjustments based on intention forms, transportation, siblings, and even shared housing. With safety still being our number one priority, we continue to prepare our school to support social distancing throughout our beautiful school. It is our goal to inform families of their child's teacher and which cohort (days that your child will attend) if you selected hybrid, 2 weeks prior to students returning. You will also receive information on what your child's instructional schedule. If there is another delay with when students return based on Dr. Alban's decision, that information will be shared with our Lincoln CommUNITY immediately. We have delayed the release of this newsletter to make sure we are providing you the latest and greatest information. As always, please reach out to Mr. Rhodes at eric.rhodes@fcps.org or 240-236-2650 if you have any additional questions.
In the meantime, continue to find the "HAPPY" and we'll continue to make "Lincoln Lemonade" with these lemons. Your ongoing patience, perseverance, and PARTNERSHIP is appreciated more than ever! We'll get through this...together.
Eric Rhodes - Principal
Mary Beth Smith - Assistant Principal

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - National Day of Service on January 18th (schools closed)
Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. The son and grandson of Baptist ministers, he attended college becoming a minister upon graduation. Dr. King earned his doctorate degree from Boston University in 1954. From 1954-1968 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential advocates for civil rights. Dr. King promoted change through peaceful methods by organizing boycotts and other forms of protest, he travelled more than 6 million miles and spoke more than 2500 times to audiences in support of civil rights. During his fight for civil rights, Dr. King was arrested upwards of 20 times, his house was bombed, his life was threatened, yet he persevered. In 1963 Time Magazine recognized Dr. King as it’s “Man of the Year”. In 1964, at the age of 35, Dr. King was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Upon being notified of this award, Dr. King chose to donate the $54,123 to continue the fight for civil rights. His “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” and “I have a Dream” speech bear witness to the struggle for freedom and equality. In 1968, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
The first proposal to honor doctor King’s birthday was presented four days after his assassination; however, it took until 1983 before the date was recognized as a federal holiday and 32 years after his assasination for all 50 states to make the day a state holiday.
The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 20, 2020, marks the 25th anniversary of the passage of the 1994 King Holiday and Service Act that created a national day of service that celebrates the Civil Rights leader’s life and legacy. Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
