Message From Principal Webb
Dear Longhorn families,
It has been a GREAT first week of school for our Longhorns! We are so happy to have our Longfellow family together again!
Caregivers are ROCKING the carline! Keep up the great work! Just a few reminders!
1.) Students are NOT to be dropped off on school grounds before 7:40 AM (unless they are in the BASP)
There is no supervision before 7:40 AM and students are not allowed to wait unsupervised until staff comes out at 7:40. This is a huge safety issue.
2.) Students must be picked up on time: 2:55 PM on M, Tu, Wed., Fri. & 1:55 PM on Thursday
3.) Car line and Drop off Safety Directions:
A.) For the car line, please make sure you are pulling up to the 1st spot around the circle drive or the 1st spot that is open when loading or unloading students. PARENTS stay in your car, this will help keep the carline moving and keep everyone safe.
B.) Once you have dropped off your student, please continue to drive around the circle drive and exit to the right. We do have staff at the doors to make sure students get in the building, so you do not need to wait.
C.) Please make sure your student is entering and exiting the vehicle on the CURB SIDE ONLY. There have been reports that students are running around cars to get in on the opposite side of the car as other cars are leaving. Our students' safety is our top priority!
D.) Any students that are walkers, Please make sure to go over with them the importance of using the crosswalks at ALL times and using them correctly.
We have eaten outside most days this week when the weather allowed. We will be watching the temperatures next week as it has been very hot and not many students have felt like eating when it is so hot outside.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Webb

A Note from Our Counselor: Ms. Hallie
Hello Longfellow Families!
A major part of my role as a school counselor is the teaching of Classroom Guidance lessons to every single class once a week. We cover many different topics throughout the year that vary somewhat depending on the grade level.
The four major themes of Classroom Guidance are:
Skills for learning: Students will talk about and work on skills that help students to help themselves learn such as focusing attention, listening carefully, and using assertiveness to get help with school work
Empathy: Students will learn how to identify and understand their own feelings. They will also learn how to take another person’s perspective and how to show compassion.
Emotion Management: Students will learn and practice specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong emotions such as anxiety or anger.
Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in a positive way.
Along with, and related to, these big themes we will also discuss bullying, diversity, friendship, health & safety, among others. I will be sharing more specific information home throughout the year through Principal Webb’s newsletter!

Before and After School Plans
If your child eats breakfast at school they should arrive around 7:40.
Parking spaces are at a minimum and so I encourage all students who need to be dropped off to use the carline route. Carline is for students who (before and after school) will get dropped off by parents and picked up by parents (that are not parking and getting out of the vehicles).
If your child is getting picked up after school by carline, they will go to the gym and staff will call them by their name to exit the North doors. Please have your green(yellow) sheet in your car window so we know who to call out to carline in a timely manner.
Students who are getting picked up (by parents that park on the street and walk to pick up students) or students who are walking/riding bikes home will exit out of their team doors.
KEY (before and after school program) will enter and exit from the North door.
Only parents/students who need to visit the office will enter the main (west side) door.
Reminder- students should not arrive before 7:40 am.- there is no supervision before this time.
Breakfast is served from 7:40-7:55 and those students eating breakfast that are not in the before and after school program will enter through the North door (door 3)as well.
To help slow the spread of COVID-19, the Iowa City Community School District strongly encourages universal indoor mask use for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to our schools, regardless of vaccination status. This is based on guidance from the CDC. In addition, the President’s Executive Order on domestic transportation requires students and staff to wear a face-covering while on a school bus or while utilizing other District-provided transportation.

Longfellow Elementary stands with all people of color in the fight against racial injustice and inequality. We all deserve to be safe and secure. Longfellow Elementary, as part of the Iowa City Community School District, will not tolerate racism, hate, and other discriminatory acts. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. famously said that, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” We will work hard to not let today’s injustice stop us from creating a better tomorrow for our school community. Please know that even though it is summer, you can reach out anytime.
