KMS WEEKLY UPDATE
Dear Kodiak Middle School Families,
We want to extend a sincere thank you to each and every one of you for your incredible effort and dedication during our state testing this week. The positivity, focus, and resilience displayed by our KMS faculty, staff, students, and families were truly commendable.
For those who may have missed any of the testing days or need to take makeup tests, please be informed that makeup testing will be held Monday-Wednesday, in the coming week. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in ensuring that every student has the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities.
As we swiftly approach the end of the school year, there are plenty of exciting events and activities on the calendar. From multicultural festivities, a talent show, a drama club presentation of "The Hobbit," and grade-level end-of-year celebrations, to punctuality awards, sports events, yearbook signing, and academic recognition - there is truly something for everyone to look forward to!
Let's continue to work together to make the remainder of this school year memorable and successful for all.
Once again, thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to our KMS community.
Sincerely,
Geoff Smith, Principal
Rena Rankin, Assistant Principal

How screen time & social media apps are making kids less motivated (Live Virtual Event)
April 23, 2024, various times - Click here to register free!
Have you ever wondered how screen time is affecting your child's motivation?
Join us for this eye-opening LIVE event, where we'll delve into the impact of screen time on our children's motivation, led by experts in child psychology and digital wellness.
In today's digital age, our children are constantly immersed in online environments. Social media and video apps are becoming increasingly addictive. We often hear concerns from fellow parents who struggle to pull their kids away from screens and are noticing a decline in their kids' motivation and engagement with the world around them.
The allure of platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts is undeniable, offering instant gratification and endless entertainment. However, there's growing concern about how these platforms may be dampening our children's drive and ambition, numbing them to real-world challenges and opportunities.
Join us for our upcoming live virtual event, tailored for parents and students alike, as we uncover the subtle ways in which screen time can impact our children's motivation and explore actionable strategies to combat digital distractions.
KMS ART PRESENTS: FANTASTIC BEASTS
Displayed at Kodiak Public Library - Month of April
Lurking in the stacks of the Kodiak Public Library are creatures born from the imagination of 7th grade artists. Students were tasked to create and then follow an original design plan.
Materials included whatever they could think of beyond the basic paper, glue, wire, cardboard, clay and foil. They were told to take chances, make mistakes, and adapt to the reality of what they discovered their materials would or would not do.
Slowly but surely, beasts began to emerge from crumpled up paper and Paper Mache balloon armatures, wire, and clay. They came to life and took on personalities of their own.
Kodiak Middle School is proud to present the Fantastic Beasts class of 2024.

VISITOR & VOLUNTEER PROCEDURE
KIBSD Schools are excited to welcome our visitors and volunteers to the different schools.
If you have not visited one of our schools before or have been coming for a long time, we have made some minor changes to standardize our process throughout the schools.
There will now be a sign-in binder you will be asked to sign, along with the name tag you are used to wearing. We ask for your patience, if we have not seen you before, you will be asked to present an ID when you sign in.
All non-KIBSD employees in the buildings will be asked to use staff facilities, not the student washrooms.
We also want to say good-bye when you leave so we are asking everyone to stop by the office to sign out.
ATTENDANCE, CHECK-OUT, & DROP-OFF PROCEDURES
ATTENDANCE LINE:
Please use this option to let us know that your child is going to be absent, late, or if you're picking them up early. This is OPTION 1 when calling the school at 907-486-7460.
We check the voicemails every hour.
CHECKING STUDENTS OUT:
Please call in the morning to let us know that you will be checking your student out early. Press the attendance line (OPTION 1) to leave a message. A pass will be given to your student so they can be ready when you arrive. You will come to the front entrance, ring the bell, and sign them out in the office.
DROPPING OFF LUNCH/ITEMS TO STUDENTS:
Please be sure to drop off lunch to students PRIOR to their lunch time.
When dropping off any items to students, please do so BEFORE the class they need it, and we will call them to the front office during passing period.
