Principal's Message
Good afternoon,
Thank you for all of your patience, support, and feedback as we work through making remote learning as smooth as possible for everyone. I appreciate all of the feedback we received on our parent survey, and as a result, we are making changes such as:
- clarifying attendance procedures
- streamlining Canvas course layouts
- parent communication from teachers
- reintroducing Freshman Families
We hope that this information and these changes help you and your student feel even more comfortable and at ease in our remote learning environment.
We are also preparing for our Ramp Up Week and to welcome students on campus for in-person learning on September 8th. You will find more information on what day your child should attend, the daily schedule, and more in this newsletter. We will also send targeted messages to those families who chose in-person learning next week to make sure you have all of the information you need.
I appreciate you being a partner with us on this journey, and I was excited to get to share all of the praise you had for our teachers. They are working hard to make remote learning the best that it can be for our students, and I am grateful that you are able to see and appreciate their efforts.
We look forward to continuing to serve you remote or in-person in the coming weeks, and as always, please let us know if there is anything that we can do to help. We are grateful to have such supportive parents, and we appreciate all that you are doing to help your student be successful at Oak Ridge! Thank you!
Sincerely,
Melanie Bujnoch

Attendance
By placing it here, it makes checking on your own student's attendance a little easier. When they complete the attendance check in the module, a little green check mark appears by that item. When you look in Canvas on the day they are supposed to be in that class, if you see the little green check, the student was counted present. If you do not, they have been counted absent unless they attended the live Zoom or contacted the teacher.
Canvas Updates
- All ORHS9 teachers will be live for at least 30 minutes during class time to deliver instruction, clarify directions, review notes, etc. There may be time for general questions after instruction, but students who are attending sessions just for question and answer time will need to attend during teacher tutorial times instead. This will also help everyone adjust to the schedule once teachers have in-person learners and remote learners at the same time.
- Zoom links will stay the same for teachers, and they will post the Zoom link and times on the Homepage of their Canvas page.
- Assignments will be housed in Modules in Canvas, so teachers have disabled the "Assignments" tab on the left menu to try to create more clarity and consistency between Canvas courses. The only tabs you should see now are "Home," "Announcements," "Modules" and possibly "Discussions" or "Conferences" based on teacher use in the course. All coursework will be in the Modules tab.
- Modules will begin to be set up using a "prerequisite" requirement meaning that students must progress though each part of the lesson before the next part of the lesson is released.
- Canvas Homepages will show the daily agenda and upcoming due dates for easy reference.
We are working on implementing these changes, but they require our teachers to go back and redo parts of the modules they have already created, so you should see more of them next week. Please give us some patience, and we will all get there soon!
Mr. Martin made a video tour highlighting some of these changes in his own Canvas page if you would like to see exactly what we are doing to clarify and streamline the pages.

What are the FRESHMAN FAMILIES?
This year at ORHS9, we have re-organized students and staff into interdisciplinary teams called Freshman Families! Our hope is that these Freshman Families will:
- support our freshman students in their transition to high school,
- work in partnership with our parents to ensure that EVERY student is growing as a learner and soars with confidence and high expectations and
- Assist our students in achieving their goals and finding success this school year!
Our motivation comes from an understanding that the first year of high school is pivotal and that we have a unique opportunity to be a bridge between junior high and the senior high by providing additional layers of encouragement and support.
By now, you should have heard from your student's Freshman Family leader. However, we wanted to share this introduction with you as an official welcome to the War Eagle and Freshman Families! If you have not heard from your Freshman Family by now, expect to hear from them very soon! We look forward to working with you this year!
Please watch the video below for more information on Freshman Families at ORHS9!
