Family Values
Growing up I regularly watched a handful of shows. I enjoyed re-runs of Lassie, Family Ties and The Wonder Years. As a young boy I watched these shows that seemed to represent the American Family. In a naive way, I believed most families were very similar to these.
I still vividly remember sitting on the floor in the family room and watching black and white re-runs of Leave it to Beaver. What I will never forget is how some of these shows modeled problem solving, love and core family values.
All this being said, as I attended MEMSPA last week one statistic really hit home. The All-American Family as you see with the Cleaver's represents 16% of American Families.
WOW! 16%!
Before that statistic was shared I anticipated the percentage to be closer to 45...I was WAY off.
I say this because the family dynamic has drastically changed from the time I was a boy to now. I'm not saying better or worse. I'm saying different.
It is crucial for us to "seek first to understand" when it comes to our students.
It is no secret that having involved families leads to success. Check out the below graph and then think of ways to positively involve your families.
