Writing a News Report

Writing News Reports
Your newspaper article should include the following:
- Headline: Every news article has a headline to attract the attention of the reader. The headline must state the topic of the news in a strong, short phrase or statement.
- Byline: The byline tells the reader who has written the article. It is called a "by" line because it tells "by" whom the article is written. The byline appears below the headline.
- Lead Paragraph (1st paragraph): A lead paragraph offers the reader information in a few short sentences which answer the questions: Who? What? Where? When? The lead paragraph should be interesting (hook) and provide the reader with any important details.
- Supporting Paragraphs (2nd, 3rd, and 4th paragraphs): your supporting paragraphs should answer the how and why questions. In these paragraphs, you should also include any other facts that were not mentioned in the lead paragraph. You should also include quotations from any people interviewed (usually in the second paragraph).
- Conclusion (5th paragraph): In your conclusion, quickly restate the facts and then end the article with an interesting and provocative statement.
