May 2024
Dear White Elementary Families,
It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is upon us. I want to thank all of you for for another amazing school year. We are so grateful to be part of such a wonderful and supportive community. We truly appreciate all of the things that you do to support your child's education.
As you can see below, there are a lot of things happening in the month of May. Next week is Staff Appreciation Week. I have included a flyer below that explains the focus for each day. I think you will agree that our staff goes above and beyond every single day. They truly help to make White Elementary a special place for every student.
Finally, registration is now open for the 2024 – 2025 school year. For students who are returning to TUSD or changing schools, you will already have student records and accounts to register online.
If you know your ParentVUE account, then register your child online.
If you do not know your ParentVue account, call any TUSD school or School Community Services at (520) 225-6400, and we will help!
As always, please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have.
Go Bulldogs!

Summer Transition Edition!
Any type of change - even good change - can be difficult. For some students, especially for 5th graders who are transitioning to middle school, summer break can be a big change. Here are some tips to help with the summer transition.
Maintain Routines - Kids rely on routines as a way to feel safe; knowing what to expect helps build confidence. Keep a regular bedtime during the summer, even if it’s later than usual. Keeping regular mealtimes can help keep your child in good health, both mental and physical.
Provide Clear Expectations – Rules might be more flexible during summertime! It can be helpful to talk to your child about what any new rules might look like, such as a later bedtime or more screen time, and that these new rules will change back for the new school year :)
Prevent “The Summer Slide” - Kids can lose significant knowledge in reading and math over summer break, which could have a snowball effect over each summer break. There are a number of ways that adults can help children maintain their math and reading skills.
- Encourage kids to read a book they enjoy for 20 minutes a day.
- Take them to the library to pick out books or enjoy a free activity at the library.
- Visit The Summer Book It website to sign up, read books, and earn a personal pan pizza: Camp BOOK IT! | The Pizza Hut BOOK IT! Program (bookitprogram.com)
- Barnes & Noble gives out free books through their summer reading program: https://www.barnesandnobleinc.com/our-stores-communities/summer-reading-program/
- Enroll kids in a camp or other fun, educational program.
- See Pima County Library’s site for additional resources: Summer 2024 Youth Programs in the Tucson Area | Pima County Public Library | BiblioCommons
- Apps/websites such as Prodigy and Khan Academy can help strengthen math skills. Games can be another fun way to prevent the summer math slide: https://www.hmhco.com/blog/summer-math-activities-preventing-math-summer-slide
Stay in Touch with Friends - If your child struggles socially, summer can be a lonely time. It’s easy to assume your child is having fun, but they may need your help setting up playdates or learning to call friends for a chat.
5th Grade Transitions – The transition from 5th grade to middle school can feel challenging. Ms. Miranda will cover a Middle School Transition lesson with 5th graders to help support them.

From the Nurse's Office
May is here and we are coming towards the end of the school year. It has been such a pleasure for us in the health office to care for your children and to be able to watch them grow.
May 5 – May 11 marks Teacher Appreciation Week. Show your teachers how much you appreciate all they have done for you.
All current 5th graders who will be turning 11 over the summer will need their MCV and Tdap before entering middle school. Parents of incoming kinder students, please check that they are up-to-date with their immunizations as well. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us in the health office.
Please practice water safety and wear sunscreen when out of doors this summer. We look forward to seeing you next school year.
If your child is sick, please keep them home.
