CHS Weekly Update #20
March 25, 2024
4th Quarter Frenzy
On your marks, get set....GO!!
Happy Monday after spring break to all of our CHS Families! I hope that this week off was enough to recharge your batteries enough so that you can make it through the next quarter before summer break.
For our 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students, there are exactly 42 school days remaining in this school year. For our seniors, there are 32 school days remaining. While it is an exciting time of year filled with celebrations and planning for the next year, it is easy to forget that we still have some work to do before we can successfully complete this academic year. I will try to communicate with you as much as possible about the upcoming events, so please make sure to read the dates for events in the sections below.
This week is an exciting week at Central High School because we are hosting the 2nd annual all-school Baile dance on Saturday night! This dance is the culminating event of the spirit week that has been designed to help all students find common ground and understanding of different cultures and traditions. There are dress-up days each day, a movie night, advisory activities, an assembly, a car show, and a dance that is open to all district students with a student ID. Make sure to check out our Instagram page for more information and for pictures of the fun things happening this week!
We are also very excited about a new mural that is being painted and that will be hung in our building this week. Central High School is the proud recipient of a generous gift from the Caring for Colorado Foundation. This organization has paid for the supplies and the time of professional artists who are working side by side CHS students and art teachers to paint a representation of what HOPE means to Central High School. The student body was asked to provide statements and ideas of what HOPE meant to them in November, and the artists worked with our CHS team to create a mural that is representative of our student body vision. I can't wait to see the unveiling of this wonderful project!
AP Mock Testing in several subjects is also underfoot this week at CHS. We have 198 juniors taking the mock AP Language test on Tuesday, and this is a record number of juniors taking this test! I am so excited and proud of the 11th graders who have said YES to the challenge of AP Language testing. This is an example of the increased expectation and rigor for our CHS students, and I am grateful for our teachers who are working hard to prepare students for these AP tests. Go AP Warriors!
Finally, this week is our PSAT and SAT Boot Camp week! All teachers have been asked to provide at least 10 minutes of instruction that will benefit our students for the upcoming PSAT and SAT tests. We want our students to feel confident and ready to compete academically when those days arrive, so please make sure to ask your students about any activities that may be happening in their classes. I have repeated the information about testing and important dates for seniors below in case you didn't catch the last newsletter, but please know, these days are VERY IMPORTANT to Central High School.
Spring Testing: April 16th and April 17th are VERY IMPORTANT DAYS for us at CHS. This is the time where we get to apply all of our learning from the year to see if we are growing academically. We take the reports from these tests very seriously and have been working hard all year for this day. It is GAME DAY week, and we encourage all of our WARRIORS to wear their GAME DAY shirts on these days. We will provide Gatorades and Energy Bars for snacks so that students can do their very best! Please help us pump up your students for these days to do their very best. Here are a couple other important reminders:
- 9th, 10th, 11th grade students: Chromebooks and cords will need to be turned into advisory teachers and/or the library the week before testing so that we can make sure they are all charged and functioning for the April 16th/17th test dates.
- Make-up Test days are April 23/24th in case your learner is sick on the original dates. Please call into attendance to excuse them.
- TEST OPT-OUT forms are available in the main office. Please call the main office, the counseling office, your students' counselor, or your students' administrator if you would like to fill out a test opt out form.
- AP (Advanced Placement) Tests begin in May and will continue throughout the month of May. Please pay your fees through the budget office or online.
Seniors and Graduation: We will be doing last minute grade checks for all seniors who may be on the bubble for completing graduation requirements. Please check with your student and their counselor to see if your student has everything needed to graduate. Students must have completed 25 credits in the appropriate content areas, completed English and Math Proficiency, and earned at least a 2.0 GPA. Graduation is a very special event, and we want to make sure there are no surprises at the last minute. Graduation will take place at 6 PM on Wednesday, May 15th at Stocker Stadium. COUNSELING
COUNSELING:
SENIORS: PAY ATTENTION TO DEADLINES FOR GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS. CHECK WITH COUNSELING FOR QUESTIONS.
Counselors will begin meeting with all students by grade level in order to provide them with the training and scheduling materials necessary to enter their desired schedules for next year. This is a very exciting change, but does require that you talk with your students about the best choices for course selection!
ADMINISTRATION
ADMINISTRATION: While we encourage all of you to take the PSAT/SAT tests, there are TEST OPT-OUT FORMS available. If you plan on "opting out" your student from testing in April, please take the time to fill out the form and get it to CHS office ASAP. You will find a link to this form on the CHS Home Page, under TEST EXCUSAL FORM. You may also ask your student to pick one of these up in the office to take home for you to sign, but a parent must hand deliver the signed form to the office.
DISTRICT: The window for the spring Panorama Climate and Culture Survey will be March 25-April 5th. The survey will be administered in advisory and in some classes for students who do not have an advisory. Parents do have the option to opt their students out of this survey. Please check the district website for instructions on the opt out forms.
