Week in Review Volume 38
May 28, 2021 | Boyertown Middle School-East
END OF THE YEAR OBLIGATIONS
With only four days of school left, there are still 171 materials (books, craft kits, chess sets, charge cords, and other items) missing from the library. Please encourage your student to return all items or to contact Mrs. Mento kmento@boyertownasd.org to find out about replacement costs. Students receive emails from the library each day about overdue items with titles and prices. There are no late fees this year, but we would like the outstanding items to be returned as soon as possible. If your student does not come to the building, there is a library tote outside the front doors of East where materials may be returned. If you return books to the tote, please wrap them in the trash bag in the tote to protect them from the elements.
These obligations will follow your student. Eighth graders with outstanding obligations (overdue library books, missing sports uniforms, overdrawn lunch accounts, etc.) will lose privileges at BASH until all obligations are fulfilled. These lost privileges include open campus, dances, after-school events, and open lunches. These obligations follow the students through high school, and if they are not taken care of by graduation, they will not walk in the graduation ceremony. Diplomas and yearbooks will be held until the item(s) is returned or a replacement fee is paid. Be sure to take care of all obligations now.

JENNIFER YOUNG
7TH & 8TH GRADE MATH TEACHER
Miss Young has been teaching math for 14 years with 13 of them here at Boyertown. She has taught a variety of grades 7, 8, and 9. After graduating from Boyertown, Miss Young attended Houghton College, which is a small college in western New York. Houghton College is in such a rural area that there are no stoplights in the entire town, and the closest Walmart is 45 minutes away! Miss Young graduated from Houghton College with a bachelor’s degree in Education and Mathematics. She completed her master’s degree at Wilkes University.
Miss Young loves teaching math and helping students grow as mathematicians. There are so many great math topics to study that she cannot pick just one as her favorite. Equations, angles, slope…math is endless fun! She also enjoys being the Student Council advisor here at East. In this difficult year, the Student Council members really rose to the challenge and created some fun virtual activities and events for the East students!
Outside of school, Miss Young enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family, and cheering on the Phillies. She spends time with her three nieces and one nephew. She is looking forward to things getting back to normal and hopes to get back to Citizen’s Bank Park soon!

Student sign out for appointment procedures
- Send a note to school on the appropriate day with your child.
- The note must include: the date, student name, time of pick-up, reason and name of the pick-up person. That person will be required to show ID at the front door.
- Your student MUST bring the note to the main office first thing in the morning. The information is recorded in our log and the note is signed and becomes the pass that allows them to leave class at the appropriate time.
- DO NOT send email messages to the attendance office.
Emergency Broadband Benefit Program
The Emergency Broadband Benefit Program is a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program that provides a temporary discount on monthly broadband bills for qualifying low-income households. If your household is eligible, you can receive:
- Up to a $50/month discount on your broadband service and associated equipment rentals
- Up to a $75/month discount if your household is on qualifying Tribal lands
- A one-time discount of up to $100 for a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer (with a co-payment of more than $10 but less than $50)
Only one monthly service discount and one device discount is allowed per household.
The FCC expects enrollment for the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program to open on May 12, 2021. It will end when the fund runs out of money, or six months after the Department of Health and Human Services declares an end to the COVID-19 health emergency, whichever is sooner. You can find more information on the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program at this link: getemergencybroadband.org

BASD Portrait of a Graduate – Community Input Requested
As part of our BASD Comprehensive plan, we are developing a BASD Portrait of a Graduate. This portrait will represent the collective vision that articulates our community’s aspirations for all students. A Portrait of a Graduate represents a school district's vision for the 21st century skills, character traits, and/or social-emotional competencies that students need to succeed in college, career, and life. The process of building and implementing a Portrait of a Graduate involves voices of all stakeholders.
Please follow this link to respond to three survey questions that will help guide our district in this work. We will use the collective stakeholder input to identify the key knowledge, skills, and dispositions that will allow us to continue to address our district's mission: 'To cultivate an exceptional, innovative learning community that enables students to succeed in a changing world.'
Your input and support is greatly appreciated!
LIBRARY UPDATES
May 20 - Books Due
Please encourage your students to check their district emails. Mrs. Mento sends late notices every Wednesday. Some books were checked out in October and still have not been returned. The library has to quarantine books for a week before giving them to the next student. This means we have long waiting lists for books.
Library Books Have Spine Labels
If your student accidently puts a library book on a bookshelf, it is easy to find because it has a spine label on it.
Audiobooks and eBooks available!
Students have access to eBooks and audiobooks through MackinVIA. This video explains how to login to MackinVIA. https://youtu.be/zibcfLyiz5c Kids can listen to audiobooks or read eBooks on their Chromebooks or other devices. Students can visit Mrs. Mento’s 10th period Zoom with questions (link in library Google Classroom).

Vaccine volunteers needed
We are hosting three more second dose vaccine clinics with The Medicine Shoppe and could really use your help. If you have just four hours to spare for any of the upcoming clinics, it would be most appreciated!
As the need for volunteers increases and coordinating volunteers becomes more complex, we have created SignUp Genius links to facilitate the process for all.
