Rutger's Doctorate Student Evaluates Project SEARCH at Newton for Capstone!
About Project SEARCH
Project SEARCH is a one-year, intensive job skills training program that takes place entirely inside of Newton & Hackettstown Medical Centers in New Jersey. The program serves young adults with disabilities who are motivated to work after fulfilling high school graduate requirements. The program provides a comprehensive employment training experience that incorporates both classroom-based instruction and immersive Work-Based Learning experiences. While in the training classroom, students work cooperatively with similar aged peers to learn critical skills related to employment and socialization. Students also work on career exploration and planning. Students rotate through three different internships during the course of the year. Students receive primary support from Atlantic Health System Team Members who serve as mentors. Our staff are also on-site to provide and fade support and assistance as needed.

Rutgers Doctorate Student Evaluates Project SEARCH at Newton Medical Center
βMy experience at Project SEARCH has been incredible! The interns and staff have taught me a tremendous amount in the short time Iβve been observing. Iβve learned all about the true impact that these young adults can have on their co-workers within the hospital. My favorite part has been hearing all the praise that they each get throughout their workday! From an occupational therapy (OT) lens, this program follows core OT valuesβteaching and intervention through the act of doing! A huge thank you to the interns and staff at Project SEARCH for helping me be successful in my capstone journey.β ~Tania
Tania Gafanha is a Rutgers University occupational therapy doctorate student currently completing her capstone where she is evaluating employment-based transition programs for young adults with disabilities. Currently, Tania is working with the interns and staff at Project SEARCH Newton to learn the facilitators and barriers noted in successful programming. Read more about the Rutger's program below:
