Principal Walder's Monday Memo
For the Week of December 3
Letters to Santa from Legacy Elementary
After visiting with a couple of you, I know many of you already participate in writing letters for Santa in your classroom-- so let's turn it into a good way to support a great cause! As stated in the email I received last week, "Macy's will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish for up to $1 million nationwide to support granting wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions."
Macy's "Believe" campaign also is a competition between schools across South Dakota to see who can write the most letters to Santa. The school that writes the most letters to Santa will earn $250 for the school. Letters can be from any student or staff member in the school.
For those of you that would like your class to participate, Karen and Emily are working on a mailbox to keep in the lunchroom area for students to see. If you already write letters, you have many options to copy the current letters and/ or have the students copy them for handwriting or typing practice.
This would also be a great way to show students how to address an envelope, including their return address. If you fold 8 1/2" by 11" standard paper into three like you'd be putting it into an envelope then use tape to close it on the top and sides, you can create a "make-shift" envelope that will work for this. This will be a lot for the younger grades, so maybe even working with your "reading buddy" partner class might be an option. You can also reach out to Mrs. McCord about the student council helping fold, too.
If you choose to participate, please make sure all the letters are in the box by December 19th. We will be taking all the Letters to Santa to Macy's to be mailed on Wednesday, December 19th after school.
Here are some links to the information about the Letters to Santa Campaign. There are downloads to stationery, ideas for classroom integration that include letting students know about Make-A-Wish, and activity pages to print for students.

Santa's Address
In order to deal with the huge flow of letters to Santa, the United States Postal Service has created an entire page on their website to help parents and teachers know how to get their letters to Santa. The USPS does get letters to Santa from this address.
Here is the link to the full USPS page explaining how this process works. Please let the students know that I'll get the letters to Macy's and they will actually take care of the postage for us.
