Beat Those Winter Blues!
As a teacher said to me the other day, "is today January 208th?" The winter season can be long and tough for both children and parents – it gets darker outside earlier and the cold, snowy weather has everyone cooped up indoors. When you’re in areas in the U.S. where winter comes early and stays late, it can be LONG! Winter months can cause an increase in depression and anxiety in teens, especially if you haven’t had much snow to roam around in! Lets face it…that’s the best part of winter when you’re a kid! It doesn’t have to be a gloomy time for you and your children, though. I know the easy thing to do is to have them go on their phones or play video games online; I do it with my own kids. However, most of the social media problems we see in school happen during the winter months. We need to set screen time and promote other activities. Here are some tips to help your family beat the winter blues:
Encourage them to get some exercise: Though they may have low energy levels, encouraging your child to exercise can improve symptoms and actually boost their energy. Walking outside is a great low-impact activity that can also expose them to sunlight and fresh air. And yoga is another good one for clearing the mind, too.
Help them stick to a regular sleep-wake schedule: Although they may feel sleepier than usual, establishing a consistent sleep schedule can help your child get back on track. Teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep per day (unless your doctor recommends something different) and can benefit from going to bed and waking up at the same time each day.
Spend some extra time on their schoolwork: A child struggling with the winter blues may find it difficult to concentrate on their homework. It can therefore be helpful to inform your child’s teachers of the situation. Try to set aside more time each night to work together on their assignments.
Be patient and reassuring: One of the most beneficial things you can do for your child is to be patient. They may be irritable, sluggish and maybe even a little apprehensive about being social, but consistently supporting them and letting them know their symptoms can get better may lift their spirits.
If students are going to use phones and gaming sites, make sure it's in moderation. Tell them to use compassion and only talk to people they know/trust when on social media. Lastly, encourage them to speak up if they see anything unusual online. They can speak with a parent, counselor, principal or another trusted adult. Make sure their phone is programmed with ok2say. They can call 8-555-OK2SAY (855-565-2729) or text 652729 (OK2SAY). This is a program put on by the Michigan State Police where they can anonymously report anything suspicious.

WIDA
The WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment) is given to students at Carleton (and other K-12 students in 37 states) that are English-language learners. There are four components to the assessment including Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. It is imperative that students try their best on this test as it helps us determine proper class placement and any needed interventions. The WIDA will begin at Carleton on Monday, February 3rd and has broken students up into various smaller groups.
For the last three years, Carleton Middle School students have had some amazing WIDA results. We'd like to keep that streak alive so encourage your youngster to try their best and pass this test. If they do, they'll never have to take it again!
