TerraNichol Academy of the Arts
Our Journey October 15th-18th, 2019
Learning Lab Exploration
The TerraNichol Animal Rescue was a busy place. Many of our animals were placed into forever homes. Potential adopters were required to spend time with the animals walking them around the bike path, reading to them, relaxing in the hammocks, and taking them for a veterinarian check. Then an adoption form was required to be sure that each animal was going to a loving home. Students began to understand the process of adoption and the responsibility of having a pet.
Miss Terra has observed the need for introducing many fine motor activities. Hand, finger and wrist strength is important for future skills including writing and we see many students needing further development in this area. Incorporating a variety of sensory materials for snipping, pouring, sifting, scooping, rolling, stamping and pressing as well as activities for lacing, stringing, cutting, beading, and using tools such as tweezers and hole punchers were incorporated to progress small muscle strength. Please keep this in mind when choosing activities at home.
While literacy is always a strong focal point for the teaching team many students are beginning to demonstrate a greater interest. From asking to find letters in their name in learning labs. We will challenge the students this month to stamping words into playdough and forming play dough snakes to replicate letters!
The Culinary Kitchen was busy with little chefs preparing and baking treats for the four-legged friends at Satchel's Pet Resort and Englewood Humane Society. Scooping, pouring, cracking, and rolling created big smiles as students were intoxicated by the smells of pumpkin, cinnamon, and sunflower butter. The students really wanted to eat the treats themselves! We incorporated math skills like measuring, servings, more or less as well as science concepts as we observed the changes made as we added each ingredient. Students learned the importance of following a recipe accurately as well as the directions. We are excited to deliver these treats at the end of the month when we drop off the other supplies collected through the 4 the Love of Pets drive.
We were excited to have Pure Imagination Miss Kristi offering us our first Extended Art Enrichment Program. Students will begin making Mosaic Hot Plates next week. We are eager to see the finished project!
Students have been working hard to take care of all of our new plants in the garden boxes, as well as around the playscape. Our committed gardeners have been adamant about checking the garden, watering and we will begin documenting the progress.
Next week we look forward to going on a safari in the music workshop! Dancing to Animal action during creative movement, continue making animal patterns, science spider project and continue adopting and finding the best home for all our animals in the rescue.
Recycled Pool Noodles make awesome telescopes.

Developing our Fine Motor Skills
Every day we are providing children opportunities throughout the day to manipulate small items, push and pull with their hands and fingers and practice small movements. Practicing fine motor development.

The Blue Period of Picasso is the period between 1900 and 1904 when he painted essentially monochromatic paintings in shades of blue and blue-green, only occasionally warmed by other colors. These somber works, inspired by Spain but painted in Paris.
Picasso's major stylistic phases as described by a variety of Picasso scholars, writers, and critics.
The main phases of his Picasso's art (as the world and his life changed, so did his art) were:
1. Blue Period (1903-5). Sad, gaunt people in gloomy settings, and then circus and harlequin subjects. The predominant colour is a melancholy blue.
Example: "Harleqins family" 1906.
2. Rose Period (1905-6). Romantic, delicately treated subjects in pale pink. Example: "The two brothers" 1906.
3. Cubism (1907-25, includes the Proto-Cubist, Analytical and Synthetic Periods). Natural forms were changed to geometric-like shapes. Distortion and multi-view figures in mainly dull colors.
Examples: "Guitar" 1913, "Three Musicians" 1921.
4. Neo-Classicism (1920-30). Heavily-built sculpturesque Grecian women. Example: "Three Woman at the spring" 1921.
5. Surrealism (1926 onwards). Dream-world compositions. Example: "Drawing for Guernica" 1937.
6. A style reminiscent of stained glass (1932 onwards). Grotesque conventionalized and disjointed forms outlined with thick black lines. Examples: "Interior with girl drawing" 1935.
7. A style with strong expressionist elements (1938 onwards). At one stage he appeared to be influenced by Negro sculpture His first consideration in artistic expression is form.
Even when his Cubist paintings bear a resemblance to objects, we must not look for realism in the usual way, but we should aim at deriving satisfaction from the patterned compositions of fragmentary and overlapping shapes. Sometimes we wonder what an object or ahead looks like on the other side and we walk around to see. Similarly, certain paintings of Picasso's show both the front and the side of a person or object. The painting "Three Musicians'' is often referred to as the last great work of Cubism.
The First Clay Project
Self Portrait Plates.
The clay pieces will be apart of our school fundraiser "The Art Gallery Exhibit" in the Spring celebrating "The Week of The Young Child."
Animal Yoga Flow
Try yoga as a family at yoga. We have heard positive feedback on the bedtime yoga resources from our Founder Miss Terra. Parents are loving the bedtime yoga routine to help balance our busy minds at nighttime. NAMASTE Little Yogis. The light in me is the light in you. Peace, balance, light, gratitude and joy.
School Schedule Arrival in the morning.
School begins at 8:30 am. Students may not be dropped off on the playscape early than 8:30 am. Teachers planning time is crucial in the morning to prepare for the day. When students arrive before their scheduled time this prevents teachers from fully setting up and opening the school for the day. Thank you for your support and assistance.
Please, Please make sure that the students are taking a potty break and washing hands prior to arriving on the playscape. Many students are expressing a potty emergency at arrival time.
