Prestons Post
Term 4, Week 1
Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 4. We are so excited to see everyone back for a great term of learning and fun. A special welcome to our new students and their families, we are sure that you will love being a part of the Prestons family.
School Events
We have lots of great events and excursions planned this term. It is important that you check the Dates to Remember below, facebook, Skoolbag and also check your child's bag for permission notes. We do not want students to miss out on any of the fun events or excursions.
Arrival at School
Many families are dropping their child off outside the school gates BEFORE school supervision starts. Please note that gates open at 8.30am. Students should not be at school before this time as there is NO SUPERVISION. We have Before and After School care available onsite if you require care before 8.30am.
Parents Approaching Other Students
Parents should not approach other students at any time, either on school grounds, at Cubby OOSH or outside of school grounds. If you have any concerns please contact the school so that staff can support your child. All students at Prestons have the right to feel safe and happy at school. Thank you for your support in this important matter.
Road Safety
As we return to Term 4 I would like to remind all of our families to drive and park safely around our school. The supervised crossing area keeps our students safe, please ensure that you follow the instructions from the crossing supervisor and stop (as the law requires) at the crossing. It is important that families also adhere to the 40km speed limit around our school as well as in the streets close by, adhere to parking restrictions and not double park. Please do not call students across the road in front of cars. Safety of ALL of our students is paramount and we ask everyone to help with this. Thank you for your support in this important area.
Learner Qualities
Our learner quality for this term is Resilience. This is an important skill which will assist our students as they move through life. Teachers will be teaching this important skill this term and we ask that you speak to your child about being resilient as well. So far this year we have learned about the learner qualities of Teamwork, Perseverance and Growth Mindset.
We hope you have had a wonderful week. Don't forget to ask your child what they are learning at school.

Year 7 Placement in a Selective High School in 2024 (Year 5 Students 2022)
Selective high schools cater for academically gifted students with high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic standard. Selective high schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, and by using specialised teaching methods.
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2024, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).
Detailed instructions on how to apply and the link to the online form will be available in early-October 2022 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.
Applications open on 18 October 2022 and close on 16 November 2022. You must apply before the closing date.
You must submit only ONE application for each student.
The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 4 May 2023.
Parents and Carers with no internet access are advised to access computers at a public library.
Last Day of Term 4
As we near the end of the year, I want to thank you for your ongoing support and notify you of a date change for the last day of Term 4 classes.
Students will now finish school on Friday 16 December 2022.
This is due to an additional School Development Day announced for staff across NSW public schools.
School Development Days allow our staff to participate in professional learning that was put on hold due to COVID-19 staffing pressures and plan ahead for 2023 to ensure we meet the needs of our students.
With this change, we ask that you arrange alternative care for your child on Monday 19 December.
Classroom Chat with 1 Tigers
1Tigers have had a great start to term 4. The students have participated in a great deal of fun and engaging learning tasks this week.
The Tigers have been super excited to spend time with their year 4 buddies fortnightly on Tuesdays, reading and practising their sight words.
The students in our class are super excited to go to the zoo on Monday, I wonder what animals they will see!
Classroom Chat with 4/5 Ravens
Welcome to Term 4. We are excited for the wonderful learning opportunities in place for this term. For reading we will be learning about our connection to country and how we connect to special places. We will be focusing on specific vocabulary and increasing our background knowledge on places within Australia. For writing we will be writing informative texts and using technical language.
In maths we are leaning about time and creating a timeline. It would be great if students could send a baby photo, toddler photo and a current photo for us to use during math lessons.
We are excited to be attending an excursion to Camden Park Environmental Centre, Menangle where we will participate in educational experiences, use sample collection equipment to collect, identify and classify a range of insects and aquatic macroinvertebrates in a catch and release study.
Swim Scheme 2022
Prestons Public School students thoroughly enjoyed two weeks of bus rides to attend Swim Scheme at the Whitlam Leisure Centre. The students formed new friendships among mixed age groupings and enjoyed singing in accompaniment with their peers on the bus.
Students participated in valuable water safety lessons. Students developed and strengthened their confidence in the water by learning skills to tread water, back scull, float, submerge under water, breath control and swim freestyle to a distance.
The Senior students were particularly commended by their swim instructors for representing the school positively in the local community.
Student Parliament Update
The Student Ministers and class SRC representatives have been busy putting their proposals into action. Students have led lunch time craft initiatives, fundraised for flood affected schools through Jersey Day, initiated a cleaner appreciation afternoon tea and hosted their guests with kind words of gratitude.
Students are continuing future projects in order to fundraise for the installation of football posts and a ninja warrior course.
Parliament is held every fortnight giving students the opportunity to voice their opinions and suggestions to bring about positive change within our school community.
Friday Recyling Initiative
Please remember to help support our school and student parliament initiatives by bringing a bag of recyclables bottles to our Ministers and fellow students that will be waiting at gate 1 on Friday mornings. Students that donate a bag of recyclables will receive a raffle ticket to go in the draw for a $2.00 canteen voucher that will be drawn on the day.
Rubbish Warriors
We have had a number of students taking pride in their school by volunteering their time at break times to help keep their school, rubbish free. A special thank you to those thoughtful students that have shown Prestons Pride. The students have often commented on how much rubbish they have collected and have shared their fustration about their peers for leaving rubbish on the ground. We would love for you to support our movement to elimate rubbish from our playground with a combined effort to speak with your child about the importance of taking care of their school gardens and playground.
