Celebration of learning assembly
Yesterday was our inaugural ‘Celebration of learning’ assembly, where students who earned a Silver Award received their certificate and enjoyed a morning tea with myself and their parents.
We also celebrated outstanding attendance, with students receiving a certificate for the most days being at school in Term 1.
Congratulations to Devishi who had her name drawn from the Outstanding Attendance list, received a canteen voucher and joined the morning tea!
School Attendance - every day matters
Building positive attendance habits
You can help build positive attendance habits by:
helping your child learn the importance of punctuality and routine
making sure your child arrives on time from the start of the school day at 8:55am, ready to learn
reducing disruption to learning where you can, by planning any necessary appointments outside of school time
contacting your school to explain any absences (within 7 days of the first day of any absence)
making sure any holidays or medical appointments are taken outside school hours
working with the school to encourage and support regular attendance.
Opportunity Class Year 5 2025
Applications for placement in a Year 5 Opportunity Class (OC) in 2025 are now open. Applications close 20 May 2024.
Application information can be downloaded by visiting Opportunity classes – Year 5.
The opportunity class placement timeline is below:
Parent/Teacher Interviews
Year 1 to Year 6 interviews will be held early next term. Parent teacher interviews are an important opportunity for us to develop strong home-school partnerships as teachers and parents/carers spend time sharing key information that will maximise each child’s success at school this year. We take great pride in working in partnership with parents and carers and it is so wonderful to have this partnership reciprocated by our school community.
A note will be sent home this week with further information on how to book for your child’s parent/teacher interviews.
ANZAC Ceremony
Toongabbie West Public School will be holding their annual ANZAC Day ceremony on the first day of Term 2 - Tuesday 30 April, 2024.

Wonderful Work By The Students
It is my absolute pleasure to see students achieving their learning goals.
I love having them visit me in my office.
Look at the amazing work that the students have shared with me this fortnight.
I would like to congratulate all our students for a wonderful and productive Term 1. I have seen many students grow in confidence and learn new skills over the term.
I wish everyone a safe and relaxing break. The last day of term is Friday 12 April. Students will return to school for Term 2 on Tuesday 30 April. Staff will be participating in professional learning on Monday 29 April, focusing on curriculum implementation. This is a focus for all NSW Department of Education schools next term.

We, in 2D, can’t believe we have already had a full term of learning. What a term it has been though!
We have been working really hard on our writing and just last week we received our ‘top secret’ writing missions. We arrived to school last Wednesday and Mr Lavercombe was dressed like a spy. We had an adventure out on the playground where there were lots of spy tasks like dodging laser beams, cracking tricky codes and abseiling steep hills. When we arrived at our final destination each of us received our top secret spy writing mission (personalised goal). We can’t wait to start improving our writing.
In our English lessons we’ve been learning about letter writing. Mr Lavercombe reached out to another school in Darlinghurst and we found ourselves a 1/2 class that we are now pen pals with. We have been practising writing letters to them and even learning how to write and send emails. We like getting to tell another class in Sydney all about ourselves, our cultures and what we are learning.
It’s now time for the school holidays but we can’t wait to be back for Term 2!

Helping our Children cope with… Disappointment
Not making the team, not being chosen for a leadership role, and not spelling a few words correctly in a spelling test, are all a part of learning how to cope with disappointment. More importantly, learning how to cope with disappointment is a part of growing into a responsible young adult.
How a child responds to feelings of disappointment will mostly depend on their age and maturity.
Regardless, there are many ways to help them learn to cope and move past disappointments.
· Help your child identify the emotions they feel and express them in an acceptable way. Be available to help them work through the emotions.
· Listen. Give them an opportunity to talk about why they think things didn’t go the way they expected them to go.
· Help them find something they can be good at that matches their interests and skills. Encouragement and praise for what your child can achieve go a long way in helping them understand and deal with what they can’t. Talk to your child about their strengths or what you see as their positive traits and help them realise that we are all good at different things and no one is good at everything.
· Celebrate having a go as if it were a “win”. Give as much praise for having a go as you would do for a winning outcome.
· Let your child know that you love him or her, win or lose. Hugs and words of encouragement can ease the pain or disappointment.
· Be aware of when a sibling has some big successes. If people are gushing about one child’s achievement, a sibling may feel sorry for themselves or want to make you as proud as the other child has. Some well-considered words from you can make a world of difference to your child. Help your family celebrate each other’s success, being able to congratulate a sibling for their success is a remarkable trait. And when you see them lose gracefully, remember to congratulate them on handling it so well.
· Think of helpful things to say to your child. For example:
“Winning isn't the most important thing – what’s important is the effort you put in, your positive attitude, and the fact that you can learn from everything and keep trying”.
“If you want to be a leader just act like a leader - you don't need a title or a badge, because some of the best leaders don't have one.”
“Well done for giving it your best shot and better luck next year. Remember you have the rest of your school years ahead of you to try out - just keep showing everyone those great qualities that you already have."
· Remember that children watch how we cope with disappointment too. Don’t be afraid to let them know of your mistakes and how you positively deal with them.
