A Look at Our Week
Reading assessments begin this week, and our Math End of Grade Assessments are underway. I cannot believe how much your children have grown academically this year! You will receive information on these assessments in the final report. In the meantime....make sure your kids get to sleep early. I always tell them that 07:30 is the magic bedtime! It's amazing when you look at the American Academy of Pediatricians sleep recommendations for how many hours Kindergarteners need (10-11 hours). This is so hard to adhere to when the evenings are light, but their brains really need that time!
After our reading assessments are over, my goal is to turn them into "Avid Readers", so that they really want to keep reading and growing over the summer. Unfortunately, our district is unable to offer reading camp for their grade level this year, so I want them to be begging you to take them to the library/bookstore all summer. You might even get some peace and quiet as they discover the joy of a good story!
Social Studies: Map making
Last week we worked in groups to map the classroom. We first looked at world maps, and learned about 'Keys". Then the kids worked in groups to construct their own maps of the classroom by following the key. It was an illuminating activity, and convinced me that it would be really useful in the last few weeks to focus in on group collaboration. We have so many natural leaders in the classroom, and I want to foster good teamwork, especially as these are some of the key skills that your children will need when they eventually enter the workforce. I'm ready for lots of role-play, drama games, and music as we learn more about key interpersonal skills.
Math and Reading: We will be working in small groups/clubs during Math and Reader's Workshop, as well as independently. This is to support interpersonal growth, as well as getting prepared for the 1st grade classroom.
Writing: Some of you may have heard that our "restaurant" is turning into a "Post Office" this week. Thank you so much for the supplies sent in by some parents that were press-ganged into it by their childrens' persuasive letters! If anyone has anything they think might be useful for a classroom post-office, please it our way. Your children are able to write petitions, songs, signs, books, and now letters to persuade others to help change the world. Get ready for lots of persuasive notes sent your way!
