Math
What's Happening This Week?
Introducing
- Subtracting Fractions and Mixed Numbers with Unlike Denominators
Reviewing
- Finding Equivalent Fractions using Factors, Products, and Multiples
- Division Strategies
Check your student's planners for homework assignments this week. Math homework is assigned Monday through Thursday every week. Binders and planners should come home nightly. I will also be using the planner to communicate behavioral concerns during Math workshop. You may see tally marks if a certain off task behavior is address during independent or whole group learning time.
Science
Earth Systems Unit
- Student will explore similarities between the Sun Earth and Moon system.
- Students will create a model to demonstrate how the Sun's movement across the sky creates day and night.
Unit Wrap Up-Benchmark Assessment Tuesday and Wednesday
Language Arts
- We are working on nonfiction text features.
- We will be working on finding the gist of paragraphs to help us create summaries of sections of nonfiction text.
- We will also continue to use text evidence to support our answers.
- For writing we will be working on when to change y to i when adding a suffix.
- We will also be working on editing in writing
- We are working on a writing piece about moving to the colonies. They are keeping a journal of what daily life would have been like in the colonies. They picked a colony last week that they were researching, now they are journaling about what they think life would have been like during that time according to what they learned about there colony.
THIS WEEK READING LOG HOMEWORK WILL GO INTO THE GRADE BOOK!! This homework will not be part of your child's average, but I do want to use it as a way to communicate that your child is completing the weekly homework of 120 minutes of at home reading each week.
Social Studies
- We will begin learning states and capitals for the southern states. Our test for this will be December 7th.
- We will be reading about the French and Indian War
- We are learning about rising tensions in the colonies with England, such as the Quartering Act, the Stamp Act, and the Boston Massacre.
Word Work
Students will need to know how to spell the spelling words only. They will need to know the meaning and how to use the Flocabulary words.

Each test will have two dictation sentences that the students will write on their papers. They will be graded on the spelling words in the sentences and spelling words from past lists. They will also be graded on proper capitalization and punctuation and possibly whatever skill we are working on for the week.
