Principal's Message
Larsen Families,
We begin this April with our Spring Break April 1st through April 12. School will resume Monday, April 15. We will have our Open Campus and will recognize students that are displaying good character. We celebrate Earth Day April 22.
Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by Earthday.org including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. The official theme for 2024 is "Planet vs. Plastics."
Each spring, students in grades three through eight participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). This year, students will take the following test(s) between May 1st- May 19th. Students in grades 3,4,5 will be bringing a letter home.
REMINDER: It is essential that we continue having your support in order to maintain safe and orderly student drop-offs & pick-ups. We are trying to maintain our roundabouts open for your convenience. If this continues to be a safety issue we will be forced to close off our roundabouts and only have walk up drop off and pick-up.
We call on all of our Larsen community members to help us avoid the following unsafe driving behaviors.
PLEASE DO NOT:
DO NOT Park or Pass on the roundabouts
Do Not block the crosswalks.
Do Not block our neighbors driveways, Leave your car in the middle of the street without a driver.
Use profanity and yell at other drivers. Our students can hear and see everything!
We appreciate everyone's support in ensuring a positive and safe learning environment for our Roadrunners. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!
If you have any questions or need any support at school or home, please stop by, call us at 805-986-9740 or email.
Ms. Jimenez - Principal

SAFETY FIRST
Safety is our number one priority at Larsen. We ask that during morning and afternoon Drop Off and Pick up, you do not park in the roundabout in front or back of the school. The Parking lots are for district staff and individuals who need accessible parking only except for a few labeled visitors parking spots. We recommend you park in the street and walk up to pick up your child.
If you use the roundabout, you must drive through and if your child is not visible, you must drive out of the roundabout and reenter at the street. There is NO PARKING on the roundabout.
The roundabout is a single lane drive there is NO passing on the left. Students are boarding and exiting vehicles.
Remember to use crosswalks and sidewalks when walking to campus. Please be respectful to staff as we work together to enforce safety for all. Thank you in advance for making our school safety a priority!
CAFE CON LECHE/COFFEE AND Cafe con leche/Coffee and CREAM PARENT Meeting 03/15/24
We are proud to bring our educational partners, "Cafe con Leche"Coffee and Cream to Larsen! These parent and staff meetings are designed to help you learn more about Larsen, how schools operate, valuable community resources, ask questions and receive any support you may need.
Please join us Friday, May 03 at 8:30 AM.
Attendance Matters
Too many absences can keep your student from succeeding in school and life and slow academic and social progress. Last year our school attendance rate was 92%. This year we have set a goal for having a school attendance rate of 97%. Missing just 2 days of school a year can slow the progress of your student!
Please try to have your student attend school every day they can. If you are unsure about the health of your student our school nurse can help make the decision.
Please call (805) 986-8740 if you have any questions or we can help in any way!
Spring Pictures
Bring your pretty smilles for Spring Pictures on Wednesday, April 24. It will be a students uniform day. Students can wear school appropriate clothing and no open toe shoes.

State Testing - Spring 2024
Each spring, students in grades three through eight participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).
This year, your child will take the following test(s) between May 6th- May 17th:
Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in English language arts/literacy
Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in mathematics
Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in science (grades 5&8 only)
The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are online tests that measure what students know and are able to do. The tests include many different types of questions that allow students to interact with the test questions. Results help identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support he or she needs to be successful in school.
To learn more about either the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or the CAST, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding Web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.
You can look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which
can be found on the CAASPP Web Portal at http://www.caaspp.org/practice-and-training/index.html

GOALS OF THE DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM
GOALS OF THE DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM
Dual language immersion is a research-proven instructional approach that prepares students to think, read, and write in two languages, resulting in students becoming bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural.
Dual Language Immersion programs are additive, meaning that a child does not lose their native language but instead strengthens their native language and adds a second language.
Bilingualism and biliteracy prepare students to think more broadly and critically, results in higher language arts and math achievement and increases career pathways opportunities in adulthood.
Ansgar Larsen’s Dual Language Program follows a 90/10 model. This model begins in Kindergarten with 90% of the academic instruction delivered in Spanish and 10% of the academic instruction delivered in English. This ratio is adjusted as students matriculate from grade to grade. For example: Kindergarten = 90% Spanish, 10% English. First grade = 80% Spanish, 20% English. Second Grade = 70% Spanish, 30% English. Third Grade = 60% Spanish, 40% English. Fourth Grade = 50% Spanish, 50% English. Fifth Grade = 50% Spanish, 50% English
The 90/10 model requires a closely aligned curricular program where instruction in key content areas such as language arts and math so that the skills are not retaught in both languages but are built upon in each language.
