SPRING OPTIONAL TESTING FOR IDENTIFICATION OF GIFTED STUDENTS
Although your child may or may not have taken the CogAT in December, you may request that your child be tested on the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT). If you wish to have your child participate in this round of testing, all requests must be made through the below online link by March 15, 2019. In order to decrease disruption to your child's instruction, this testing opportunity will take place prior to the start of the school day. We have scheduled this 45-50 minute testing session to be administered from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 28, 2019, at (School Name).
Please note it is the parents' responsibility to provide transportation the morning of testing to your child’s building. Additionally, know that Sycamore cannot use kindergarten or first grade scores for gifted placement.

Attention Fourth Grade Parents Hold the Date:
Blue Ash Elementary will host a Growth and Development preview night on March 13, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash Elementary (UCBA) Wing. This is an information meeting for Fourth grade parents to preview materials used for 4th grade Growth and Development class. This is a parent only meeting no childcare will be provided.
Illness Reminders: If you child is ill, remember to call the school absence line at 513 686-1714. It can be difficult to decide when and how long to keep an ill child home from school. The timing of the absences is often important in order to decrease the spread of disease to others.
Our school district guidelines note, If your child has a fever, is vomiting or has diarrhea they must stay home until they no longer have the symptom for 24 hours without the use of medication to control the symptoms. However, if your child was diagnosed with the Flu (Influenza) they may be contagious for up to 7 days from beginning symptoms. It is recommended to keep students home until until coughing, sneezing and running noses are improved to reduce the chances of spreading Flu illness to others and delay your child’s complete recovery.
Check our school illness guidelines at http://www.sycamoreschools.org/Page/2309 .The school district health handbook has more information and found on the district website at http://www.sycamoreschools.org/Page/2268 .

Health and Wellness
March is Sleep Awareness Month! This month we are discussing sleep and what we can do to improve the quality of our children’s sleep. Sleep has a huge impact on children’s moods, impulses and their ability to focus on school work. So how many hours of sleep do children need? According to the National Sleep Foundation, that depends on our child's age. Below is a simple guideline:
Infants (4-11 months): 12-15 hours
Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours
Preschoolers (3-5): 10-13 hours
School aged (6-13): 9-11 hours
Teenagers (14-17): 8-10 hours
Here are a few tips to promote a good night of rest for your child:
- Avoid offering drinks with stimulants or large meals close to bedtime such as energy drinks or sodas or large meals before bedtime which will make it harder for children to fall asleep.
- Develop a device-free and consistent bedtime routine to help your child mentally and physically relax, include simple stretches, reading a book, listening to relaxing music or taking a bath.
- Create a Sleep Friendly Environment by making sure the bedroom is quiet and darkened and ensuring your children’s room temperatures are are not too hot or cold.
- Turn off Electronics and reduce blue lights in their bedrooms by dimming lights on digital clocks and turning off any digital devices including iPads and phones overnight. “The blue light that’s emitted from these screens can delay the release of sleep-inducing melatonin, increase alertness, and reset the body’s internal clock (or circadian rhythm) to a later schedule. For more, see: https://sleepfoundation.org/content/how-blue-light-affects-kids-sleep
- Keep bedtime on a consistent schedule both on weekdays and weekends to help your child fall asleep more easily. This will help them become drowsy and alert at the same times each day.
