Blizard of Glass
2014 Rebecca Caudill Nominee
On December 6, 1917 two ships collided in Halifax Harbour. One ship was loaded top to bottom with munitions and one held relief supplies, both intended for wartorn Europe. The resulting blast flattened two towns, Halifax and Dartmouth, and killed nearly 2,000 people. As if that wasn't devastating enough, a blizzard hit the next day, dumping more than a foot of snow on the area and paralyzing much-needed relief efforts.
Written in Bone
Written in Bone tells the stories of eight colonists—their lives, deaths, and their place in our country’s history. Even though these people left little or no written record of their lives, archaeologists and forensic anthropologists have learning about their lives by reading and revealing the stories that life and death have written in their bones.
Secrets of a Civil War Submarine
In 1864, after sinking the U.S.S. Housatonic, she assured a place in history as the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in battle. But immediately after doing so, the Hunley vanished. In the years that followed, the missing submarine acquired legendary status. Her discovery on the sea floor, in 1995, rocked the world of American history—even more so when archaeologists realized that her hull was completely intact.
