Keller ISD Strings Academy
2015-2016
Keller ISD Strings Academy Returns for 2015-2016
Keller ISD will be providing strings instruction for students in grades 2-12 in the following classes:
- Young Violinists - a beginning violin program for students in grades 2-4. Students will be divided by grade, and will be instructed by an amazing staff of passionate teachers!
- Beginning Orchestra - beginning instruction on violin, viola, cello, and bass, for students in grades 5-6. This is a fantastic opportunity for incoming fifth grade students, who just completed their first year of violin study, to learn a new instrument, or continue to develop on the violin.
- Intermediate Orchestra - continued instruction in violin, viola, cello, and bass, for students in grades 5-12 who have had at least one year of instruction, and are prepared for the next level!
- Advanced Orchestra - students in grades 5-12 are selected to this group through an audition. Students should have at least two years of playing experience, and prepared to perform advanced literature.
Strings Academy Registration - September 12 (Come and Go)
Choosing a Class: Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced?
Beginning Orchestra: Incoming 5th and 6th grade students will have the opportunity to learn violin, viola, cello, or bass during Beginning Orchestra! No experience necessary!! We will have instruments available for you to try at registration, and teachers available to help you decide which instrument is right for you!
Intermediate Orchestra: This one is for students who have a year or two under their belts. Students will need to audition for this group at registration. Just bring something to perform that will show us what you can do. It doesn't have to be long...a line out of a music book is fine!
Advanced Orchestra: Students who are looking for a challenge should audition for this group! The advanced orchestra will play some challenging music, perform at public events, and even participate in all-region orchestra! You will want to bring something to perform at registration that really shows us what you can do. Keep it short, but exciting!
Auditioning for Intermediate and Advanced Orchestras: Don't worry about it...we want to make sure you are placed in the group that fits you the best! When you come to registration, you'll go into the audition room and play for a strings instructor (No one else will hear you!) The strings teacher will ask you a couple of questions, then place you in the right group! Please email the fine arts office if you have any questions!
Young Violinists: Choosing the Right Violin for Your Student
Whether you plan to purchase your own instrument, or use a district provided violin, please do not purchase an instrument without seeking the advice of a professional musician! Most music stores can provide this advice for you, or you may just come to registration and let us help you choose the right instrument! We'll have professional musicians onsite to help make the best selection for you.
Registration Fees and Expenses
- Participation Fee. A $50.00 fee covers participation in the program for the entire year. You may pay by check, cash, or credit (there is a $3.00 fee for credit). Participation fee must be paid at registration! (Please contact the fine arts office for questions about free/reduced lunch fees.)
- Materials. Students are also responsible for providing a music book, folding music stand, and all accessories (shoulder rest, rosin, etc.) Books and Folding Music Stand may be purchased at registration, or from any music store.
