Our Mission: “To share the Good News of Jesus Christ, teach children, and assist parents in training children to be witnessing Christians and productive citizens.”
Weekly Devotion
“But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”
Paul was singularly devoted. He kept the main thing the main thing. More important than his life was completing the course and ministry he had received from Jesus the day he was struck blind on the Damascus road in Acts 9. I’m often struck how the book of Acts depicts Paul having been beaten or stoned and thrown outside a city, and how every time he just gets right back up and goes back to work.
Paul’s calling is unique, and we should honor it in that way. Not every Christian is called to be an apostle. Only those men were granted a special dispensation of the Spirit to perform miracles to confirm the message of repentance and faith in the crucified and risen Jesus (see Luke 24:46-49, Mark 16:17-20, and Acts 1:21–2:4). Paul had the added burden of seeing exactly how much he had to suffer for the Name of the Lord Jesus as he proclaimed the Word of God to Israel, to the Gentiles, and even before kings (Acts 9:15-16). You do not have such a call, and neither does your pastor!
However, you do have a course and a kind of ministry that you received from the Lord Jesus to testify to the gospel of the grace of God in your own place in life. God, who poured out such abundant grace the former persecutor of the church, has also poured out His grace upon you. You, too, have been called to testify to the grace of God in the classroom, in the living room, in the office, and on the baseball diamond. This doesn’t mean you need a formal gospel presentation for all of those scenarios, but it does mean that you should be conscious of how what you do says something about what you believe about the Lord Jesus.
The goal here isn’t necessarily to win converts—that’s the Spirit’s job. But the goal here is to glorify God in your life and speech. Jesus tells us that others see those works, and they, too, will be drawn into a life of glorifying the God and Father of our Lord Jesus, whom He raised from the dead.
Let us pray: “Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee; take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.” Amen. (LSB 738, st. 1)
