Notes From the Office
CGSF Popcorn Days: We are gearing up for another successful fundraising year with Popcorn Fri-yays. Popcorn is $2.00, and we aim to have popcorn delivered to classrooms before 10:30 am on Friday. Last year popcorn days provided approximately $7 000 to our Fundraising Association. As our student population continues to grow, we know the support is needed more now than ever. We are working with our Hot Lunch ordering platform to hopefully have popcorn orders streamlined through that, for families who wish to do so. If you have any questions: please email Barb (cgsfundraising@gmail.com).
Hot Lunches: Ordering will be open from the 1st to the 20th of each month to order for the following month. Please note that there is no hot lunch ordering for ECDP or Kindergarten students. To open your 2023/24 hot lunch account (the system does not retain information from the previous year), follow the detailed instructions provided in the attached graphic (Digital Take Home Folder). When you log in, you may notice a new button to volunteer for hot lunch. Please consider volunteering to help sort and organize hot lunches from 11:30 am-12:30 pm. If you have any questions you can contact our hot lunch team at: cgshotlunch@outlook.com.
CG Gear: Our online store is back up and running for the year. Check out: https://christinagordon.entripyshops.com/ to order school clothing. There is a wide variety of styles, logos, and colours to choose from!
Student Demographic Confirmation: If your student is a current FMPSD student, you can now do their demographic confirmation to register for the 2024-2025 school year at: https://www.fmpsdschools.ca/registration/confirm2425.
Circle of Security: Alberta Health Services is excited to share that we’ll be running an in-person Circle of Security Parenting Program at the hospital beginning in May 2024 (virtually offerings will continue in the fall). COS provides support and insight for parents/caregivers of children ages 0-16 years. Circle Of Security continues to be free and offered in-person. This set of sessions will be on Tuesday mornings, at the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. Child minding/developmental programming will be available to any families with littles that could benefit! Please see attached poster (Digital Take Home Folder) for information. See attached poster for further information.
Multicultural Day: Each year, Christina Gordon School hosts a Multicultural Family Night. This is a time where families can come together to celebrate their cultural heritage! This year our school is expanding the event to have some activities take place during the school day, while some will continue to take place in the evening. Multicultural Day will take place May 8th and will include the following:
- Multicultural Showcase: We are looking for students who want to perform a dance, song, play an instrument etc. on stage! This could be a dance from your culture, a song in any language, a clapping game or rhyme, a demonstration, or even a short presentation with information about a country! If your child is interested in performing in the showcase please email Mrs. Power at karla.power@fmpsd.ab.ca. Interested students should also come to a meeting on Monday, April 29th at lunch in the Music Room.
- Multicultural Potluck: From 5:30-7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 8th, families are invited for a potluck. Bring in a dish that is special to your family and try some food from other families! This shared food could be culturally important to you, or a recipe that your family enjoys! Please bring a list of the ingredients with your food item. Doors will open for the potluck at 5:30 pm, the meal will begin at 5:45 pm, and then multicultural performances will occur around 6:15 pm.
- Parade of Flags: One way we are going to celebrate cultures at school is by learning about different flags. Classes will participate in a Parade of Flags during Multicultural Day. Each child will colour a flag template that represents their heritage, and then participate in a school wide parade! Please return the bottom portion of the attached note (Digital Take Home Folder), so we know what flag best suits your child, and the one that you want them to have for the parade. This could be a flag from a country, a province, First Nation, or the Canadian Flag! Please fill out the note to let us know what flag your child should have and return it to their homeroom teacher by Thursday May 2nd.
Cellphone Use in Schools: In a digital era, where technology intertwines with every aspect of our lives, it's crucial to strike a harmonious balance, especially within the educational settings that nurture our students' growth. In Alberta, and many other places across the world, student cellphone use is increasing. Cellphones have the potential to be powerful teaching aids that, when used appropriately, can improve learning outcomes. However, there are significant risks and concerns with inappropriate cellphone usage. They can be a distraction to students in the classroom disrupt a student’s learning and can impact student safety through bullying or harassment. You are warmly invited to participate in the following survey by Alberta Education about Cellphone Use in Schools (https://your.alberta.ca/cellphones-in-schools/survey_tools/en). This survey is a platform for you to express your thoughts and help guide potential future governmental actions regarding cellphone use in our schools.
