A Message From the Principal
Dear Parents,
This Shabbat is Rosh Chodesh Nissan and the Maftir for this week is from Parshat Bo.
In the Maftir, Shemot 12:1-20, Moshe tells Bnei Yisrael the halachot of Pesach Mitzrayim. One of the details unique to Pesach Mitzrayim, which is in contrast to the way Pesach will be celebrated in future generations, is the painting of the blood of the korban on the doorposts.
“The blood shall be a sign for you upon the houses where you are; when I see the blood I shall pass over you; thee shall not be a plague of destruction upon you when I strike in the land of Egypt. (12:13)”
What is the significance of putting the blood of the Korban Pesach on our doorposts in order for Hashem to spare us?
Rav Yossi Greenfield from Midreshet Harova shared the following idea in order to answer this question.
The events in Parshat Bo are similar to Hashem’s promise to Avraham Avinu. During brit ben habetarim, Hashem made a promise to Avraham between the parts of animals that were cut in half, each half placed on a different side (Bereshit 15:10).
This is similar to Pesach Mitzrayim when Bnei Yisrael put animal blood on each side of their doors. It is as though Bnei Yisrael in Mitzrayim were calling out, “HASHEM! I am a descendant of Avraham! That promise you made to him all those years ago was about me! Please, include me in the fulfillment of that promise.”
By putting the blood on our doorposts, we chose to be part of the nation of Bnei Yisrael.
Just as Bnei Yisrael in Mitzrayim connected themselves to their forefathers, so to we connect ourselves to our forefathers and their ongoing mesorah each day. At YLS we work to help our students feel the narrative of the Parsha as their own personal story. We use language such as, my “great, great, great x100” grandmother and grandfather were there, “we” are Bnei Yisrael, “we” are the children of Yaakov. We act out "our" history and try to understand how "we" may have been feeling and the choices "we" may have made if "we" were there ourselves. By creating specific language and learning opportunities for our students we facilitate the growth of their connection to our forefathers and their mesorah.
Shabbat Shalom,
Mrs. Becky Troodler
