What is the great depression?
The Great Depression all started in 1929 when the stock market crashed. Once the stock market crashed many people were having money problems. There was also an event called, The Dust Bowl. This was when the farmers were overusing the land causeing the soil to dry out. Wind made big dust storms and the crops were destroyed. Since the soil was dried up farmers couldnt produce products and had money problems too.
Who was involed?
The great depression involed most of America. Farmers were greatly effected by the dust bowl. People invested into the stock market were also effected by the stock market crash. Others were effected by the price of goods and the need for jobs.
How was this shown in the book?
You can tell "To kill a Mockingbird" was during the great depression because Atticus said, "The Cunninghams are country folks, farmers, and the crash hit them hardest"(p. 23). This was saying the stock market hit them hard because they are farmers and couldnt farm because of the dust bowl.
How did it end?
Once World War 2 started the econmy went back up. Many jobs were opened to mass produce all the weapons we needed for the war. With lots of jobs people were getting money and buying things again.
