Rockets, We are proud to announce the Oak Harbor High School Class of 2020 Outdoor Commencement Ceremony & Car Procession for May 17, 2020. The Ceremony will begin at 2:00 PM. This event has been designed consistent with guidelines established by Governor DeWine, the Ohio Department of Health, and the Ottawa County Health Department to assure the safety of our students and families. We respect the decision of our parents/guardians who do not feel it will be safe for their Graduate to attend.
We have an amazing Class of 2020 and our hearts are broken because we wish we could provide the traditional commencement ceremony that students have come to expect. Our Commencement 2020 plans reflect our very best attempt to honor the remarkable accomplishments of our seniors with a memorable event unique to the global pandemic environment that we are in while respecting public health orders and protocols.

FAQ:
"Why can't we have it in the stadium if grads are sitting spaced properly? Not allowed. Violates gathering of 10 or less outdoors.
"Why can't you push it back, in case guidelines lighten?"
1. Our senior leaders made it clear they wanted us to host graduation closer to the date so all have opportunity to attend.
2. The health department reports it is highly unlikely that any gatherings of more than 10 outdoors will be allowed this summer and if cases spike up, less options for ceremonies may occur as we move into summer.
"Why can't they walk on stage and get their diploma so everyone can celebrate them? If guidelines change to allow this, we will. Currently, this is not the case.
Due to the Order of the State of Ohio
School buildings remain closed remainder of the 19-20 school year
By order of the State of Ohio, our school buildings will remain closed to students for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. Benton-Carroll-Salem School District will continue our Remote Instruction Plan through the end of this school year. The last day of teaching and learning will be May 29, 2020 (the originally scheduled last day of school).
It is important that our students remain focused on their learning for the remaining school days. The work students are completing will continue to count toward their grade. Our teachers will continue to be working with students to make sure they have the essential skills they need to be successful in the next grade level. I wish to again thank the dedication of our teachers and students for the creativity, flexibility, and resilience you have shown through this crisis.
All Spring Activities including athletics have also been cancelled: We are deeply saddened for our students who are missing out on these opportunities. We all remain very proud of you!

Mental Health and Well Being
These are challenging times for adults, and more so for young people. If you think your child can benefit from talking to a counselor, please do not hesitate to call your child's school on March 30 or after.
I also want to remind you of the Crisis Text Line:
Text HOME to 741741 from anywhere in the United States, anytime, about any type of crisis.
One suggestion for our overall mental health is for us to all get outside and walk, or do some kind of physical activity (while practicing social distancing). Something as simple as a walk can do wonders for the mood and help with anxiety.

Entrance age to Kindergarten Change
2/27/2020
TO: All Stakeholders
I am writing to make you aware that the school district has changed its policy on the entrance age to Kindergarten. Effectively immediately, each child who is five years of age on or before August 1 is eligible to enroll in Kindergarten.
Prior to this, students had to be five years of age on or before September 30.
The district has made this change based on Kindergarten readiness research, and upon the recommendation of the staff and administration of R.C. Waters Elementary School. This change is in the best interests of students who will enter Kindergarten, and will improve the prospects of their educational career. This change to August 1st also puts Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools in line with the vast majority of school districts in our area.
Sincerely,
Guy L. Parmigian
Superintendent
