Adaptations in high altitude places
Climate in high altitude places
In high altitude places the climate or weather condition is extremely cold . Also the climate on mountains becomes more cooler because of the high altitude . The environment is completeley different to the sea level compared to high altitude. It means that changes occur in our bodies .The higher you go, the thinner the air gets, which means there is a lack of oxygen. This means that not many animals and plants can adapt in the enviorment.
Snow Leopard adaptations
Snow Lepoards have a structural adaptation because they have a deep nasal cavity and a large chest to help them breathe in high altitude places . They have great eyesight to help them spot their prey . They flatten their ears to prevent them from getting frost bites . Snow Leopards have large paws with fur on them . The fur protects the pads on their paws from getting torn up . To help camouflage themselves , the Snow Leopards have markings on their fur . That's how the Snow Leopard has adapted to high altitude places . Snow Leopards are very good athletes . They are very capable at marking huge leaps over ravines .
Red Pandas adaptations
Red Pandas have a structural adaptation by having a wrist bone on each front paw. This wrist bone acts as a thumb to help the Red Pandas hold bamboo . They are also shy, gentle animals . Red Pandas spend most of their day sleeping curled up with their tails wrapped around their heads .
Dall sheep adaptations
Dall sheep have a structural adaptation because the white fur helps them camouflage themselves from predators . Their fur is white which helps them blend in with the snow . In the Summer their fur does not help them , instead they go to steep rocky cliffs where there predators can not follow them . They have hooves that help them live on rocky mountains .
Plant Adaptations in high altitude
Great Basin bristlecone pine
The Great Basin bristlecone pines adapt to their environment by having an ability to survive in really hard and harsh challenging environments . The female pine cones are dark purple in colour . They also have thorn like prickles on the scales .
Snowdon Lily
Snowdon Lilies are delicate flowers that grow on rock faces so they can be out of reach from animals that might eat them . These beautiful, fine flowers are at risk because of climate change .
Whitebark Pine
The Whitebark Pine grows in places where conditions are hard and where the soil is poor. the seeds develope in the cone and is an important source of food for the birds and mammals.
