Titanium Dioxide
why is titanium Dioxide not recommended?
What is Titanium Dioxide?
Titanium dioxide is a white unreactive solid, that occurs naturally as the mineral rutile. It is also known as "titania" and shines brighter than a diamond. It is widely used to provide whiteness and opacity to products such as paints, plastics, papers, inks, foods, and toothpaste.
Titanium dioxide is found in many dairy products such as yogurt, chocolate milk, cheese, and eggnog. It is also in vegetables and salads. Not only is Titanium dioxide in food but it is in skin care, suncreen, and even paint.
Reasons why this food additive should not be used.
Reason 1- causes cancer and respiratory problems Reason 2-harmful to skin Reason 3- brain injury
Evidence
Causing Cancer and respiratory problems
Titanium dioxide has recently been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as an IARC Group 2B carcinogen. It is known to be possibly carcinogen to humans. This evidence showed that high concentrations of pigment-grade (powdered) and ultrafine titanium dioxide dust caused respiratory tract cancer exposed by inhalation and intracheal instillation. Titanium oxide nano particles have been shown to induce emphysema and lung inflammation. The exposure of lungs to nano particles may lead to chronic inflammation and negative effect on lung development, increasing the risk of respiratory disorders. The series steps that produce the rat lung cancers have also been seen in people working in dusty environments.
Harmful to skin
Although titanium dioxide is a natural ingredient, pure titanium dioxide in nature is almost always adulterated with potentially harmful contaminants such as lead, which can be harmful to the skin.
Effect on the brain
Evidence has shown that titanium dioxide can be harmful to the brain. Titanium nano particles can enter directly into the hippocampus region of the brain through the nose and olfactory bulb. The research showed that the titanium dioxide had a toxic effects on glial cells in the brain. This suggests that the exposure to titanium dioxide may cause brain injury in the future. Long-term chronic exposure and environmental pollution are not documented and a relationship between nano particle exposure and development of degenerative brain diseases may exist.
