Where Excellence is the Tradition
CRES 100th Day of School Activities
Mrs. Deb Henkes, District Tech Coach
CRES third graders celebrated the 100th day of school by dressing like it was 100 degrees. Technology teacher, Mrs. Henkes took their picture in from of the green screen and put them 'on a beach' for the day. Students then combined their fun photo with a 100th day writing prompt to extend learning and practice writing. #100thDay #EagleFun #AlwaysLearning
The first and second graders at CRES also celebrated the 100th day of school today, too! They used the AgingBooth app on their iPad to "ageify" themselves, then wrote sentences about what they might be like when they are 100 years old! Check out some samples of their writing! #100YearsOld #WritingFun #EaglePride
Some students in 5th Grade participated in a 101 Day Lego Challenge during Makerspace on Friday. Before students knew the outcome of the project they were asked to select 100 Legos. There were no specifications on sizes, colors, etc. of bricks. Only that they must have exactly 100. Once students had their 100 bricks, they were told to build something. It could be whatever they wanted, but it had to incorporate all 100 bricks, No more, no less.
This challenge encouraged creativity, developed problem-solving skills, and engineering skills as kids have to use what they have to build a design.
Some students ran out of time so they didn’t get all 100 bricks used, but it was very fun to see them work! #LegoChallenge #DesignProcess #EaglesAtWork (Pictures by Mrs. Stannard)
These students are sewing away! Mrs. Stannard shared a few lessons with some 5th-grade students on sewing and read several sets of directions to figure out how to thread the machine. It was a challenge, but once they got it up and going, students went to town on making! We have some dog pillows and doll pillows. Keep up the great work 5th Graders! #SewAwesome #Creativity #AlwaysLearning (Photos by Mrs. Stannard)

CRMS Ski Trip
Clayton Ridge middle schoolers recently enjoyed their first-semester merit trip to Sundown Mountain near Dubuque. Students had fun and also remembered their Eagle Pride expectations to Be Ready, Be Responsible, Be Respectful and especially to Be Safe! A "cool" time was had by all! #EaglePride #FunWithFriends #Skiing
Hammurabi's Code at CRMS
You've probably heard the saying "An eye for an eye", but how much do you know about the origin of that phrase? As it turns out, the phrase, and more, was recently a part of the Compelling Question posed by Mrs. Smith to the 6th Grade Social Studies classes. Students learned that the phrase was a part of the Code of Hammurabi's Laws, originally dating back to 1750 BC in Mesopotamia. Each student was assigned one of Hammurabi's codes or laws to research and dig into. Students were then tasked with writing and creating a PSA (Public Service Announcement) to explain their code/law as if they lived ancient Mesopotamia and were explaining the new law to fellow Mesopotamians on Mesopotamian TV.
Students created a storyboard to plan out their videos and were also introduced to the iMovie app on their laptops with help from technology coach Mrs. Henkes. Students used iMovie to create, record and edit a PSA video explaining their section of Hammurabi's Code of Laws.
It was a fun and engaging learning experience for all! Would you like to learn more about Hammurabi's Code of Laws?

Clayton Ridge Elementary EAGLES+ News
Ms. Geuder’s Class
January and February 2020
In January and February the Elementary EAGLES+ students have been busy completing some STEAM Challenges around the theme of Snow. The students also created Stop Motion Videos using Play-dough and a Stop Motion App. They are getting very creative with their videos.
The students in 2nd- 5th grade designed snowmen out of marshmallows and toothpicks to see who could create the tallest snowman that would stand on its own. This was a challenge for them. They figured out they had to have a good base for the snowman to stand. Some of the students also came up with other structures based on their interests.
The 3rd and 4th grade students learned about different types of snowflakes and then used marshmallows and toothpicks to create them. Many of the students did not realize how many different types of snowflakes there are.
Next, the students used cardboard, tape, string, and Popsicle sticks to create items that are used in the winter. The second-grade students created shovels that they used to shovel “snow”. Two of the shovels worked well and one did not work as well. They figured out what they would need to do to make all of the shovels work.
The third-grade students designed sleds that had to go down a ramp on its own. They enjoyed having sled races.
Fourth- and fifth-grade students designed traps to catch a flying snowman that could get out of various traps easily. One group made a trap that had a container inside with a lid that shut tight so there was no way the snowman could getaway.
Drone Science Assembly
Mrs. Stephanie Thomas, Elementary School Counselor
On January 29th Clayton Ridge Elementary hosted an assembly through Wondergy Science Edutainment! During the presentation, they were taught concepts of force and centripetal force. Additionally, propulsion and control were discussed as drones use rotors like a fan because spinning blades push the air down. In short, students were in awe of this amazing show. Fingerprint Friendship Heart Rocks
5th Graders invited their Preschool Reading Buddies to their classroom to make Fingerprint Friendship Heart Rocks for Valentine’s Day. Preschoolers kept their rocks to share at home and keep! Lots of smiles, giggles and of course friendship.

Emily Schaefers, Senior
Several Clayton Ridge High School students hosted a food drive for a service-learning project in Government Class that was held from December 16th to January 9th. The elementary and high school collected over 1,000 pounds of perishable items, filling the suburban to the brim. The winning class collected over 200 pounds and will be awarded a pizza party for their participation. Items collected were donated to the Resource Center.
