MJS Kinder Press
December 7th, 2015 - Week 13
Kindergarten Nativity Play
Thank you for joining us at the Nativity play this year. We would especially like to thank all of the parents who helped out with costumes, make-up, photos, and any other job that supported the kindergarten play. We could not have done it without our wonderful parents!
Ginger Bread House-Making Event - Friday, December 11th, 2015
On Friday, December 11th, all three kindergarten classes will participate in our annual gingerbread house-making event. This event will take place in Mrs. Heupler's class and all three classes will rotate into her class to complete this fun project.
A wonderland of candy, frosting and gingerbread pieces will be magically assembled at this special event. Long tables will be set up to accommodate parent (Dad's are welcome!) and child pairings. We are allocating 40 minutes for each child to make their own gingerbread house. The class schedule is listed below:
8:00 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. - Mrs. Heupler's class
8:40 a.m .to 9:20 a.m. - Mrs. Hale's class
9:20 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. - Mrs. Agundez's class
We request each child have a a parent, grandparent, or family friend join in the fun and help build a gingerbread house with your kindergartner. If you, a grandparent or family friend are unable to participate, please send a note to your homeroom teacher by Thursday, December 10th, so other arrangements can be made for your child.
The Mothers' Luncheon is scheduled for the same day of the event (11:30 a.m. in the gym) so our suggestion would be to wear clothing that can withstand the test of gingerbread house-making! We'll have some aprons available to use on the day of this event for anyone who will be attending our event in Mothers' Luncheon attire.
If other arrangements need to be made for a different class start time than noted, please contact Mrs. Heupler at aheupler@mayfieldjs.org to determine if we can accommodate your request.

KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM
Math-
This week in math we began learning the skill of joining two groups of numbers or addition. We started with hands-on learning by joining items and then counting to see how many were in all. For example we had girls wearing yellow dresses in one group and girls wearing blue in another. Then we joined the groups by having them all step into a hula hoop to see how many there were in all. On paper we wrote number sentences like 2 and 3 is 5.

Religion-
We have been learning about the first Christmas, culminating with the production of the Nativity Play last Friday. The children are making their own shoebox nativities in the classroom and are memorizing this verse from the Bible which sums up the significance of Christmas:

MJS Toy Drive
Mayfield Junior School is having its annual toy drive to benefit families in need in the Pasadena community. All toys collected will be given to the staff at St. Andrew's Church to distribute toys to families in the Pasadena area. We would ask our families to donate an unwrapped toy for our annual toy drive. All toys should be dropped off in each child's kindergarten classroom by Friday, December 11th. This is a voluntary request and any toys donated are greatly appreciated!
In the words of Deacon Fausto of St. Andrew's Church, "For many children, this is the only gift they will receive."
We have included some suggestions from our Director of Religion, Susan Hubert:
"Some needed gifts are soccer balls, basketballs, board games, and toys of any variety up to about age 15. Anything is welcome and all gifts are distributed to needy local families who sign up and wait in line to receive gifts for their children.

Thank you for your generosity and for blessing the many children who would otherwise not receive any gifts at Christmas. We are truly blessed to have the honor to share from our own blessings."
Shoebox Nativity Scene
Last Friday, the 6th Grade K-Pals helped the kindergartners with their Nativity scenes made out of shoeboxes. These are Nativity scenes that each child makes in kindergarten and they are a keepsake item that are pulled out each year at Christmas. All of the figurines and items included in the Nativity scene should fit neatly in each shoebox and can be stored until the next Christmas celebration!
Carpool Reminder
In an effort to make carpool run more smoothly in the morning, we would ask our kindergarten parents to continue following the rules that apply to the carpool line. We want all of our students to be safe and keep the flow of morning carpool drop-off moving efficiently. We ask for your cooperation in adhering to the rules while in the carpool line.
Each morning, 7th Graders are out in force to assist students exiting vehicles in the carpool line on South Euclid Avenue. We wanted to pass along a "gentle reminder" to all kindergarten parents that turning left onto South Euclid Avenue from Del Mar Boulevard is not allowed.
