The Curtis Connection
December 11, 2020
MR. MELA'S MESSAGE
Dear Families,
Thank you to the CPO who treated the Curtis staff to a delicious lunch. We appreciate all of your thoughtfulness!
Congratulations to Ms. Kenney and her fabulous students on their wonderful first Virtual Chorus performance of the 2020-21 school year! There were just under 200 students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade chorus all singing the same song. Please click here to see the video.
We hope you are staying well and practicing all the well-known safety measures as we deal with increasing cases of COVID-19 in our state and community. As we have learned more about this virus, some of the isolation and quarantine guidance has shifted. Isolation for those who have been diagnosed with COVID continues to be for 10 days as long as there has been significant improvement in symptoms and no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications. Quarantine guidelines have had a more dramatic adjustment. We still understand that the incubation period for COVID-19 is 14 days. However, the data has shown that most cases have an incubation period of less than 10 days. The CDC has determined that the small risk of transmission beyond 10 days is outweighed by the increase in compliance with quarantine guidelines, as well as with cooperation with contact tracing to identify close contacts.
There are now three possible quarantine options for people who have been identified as close contacts. The first two require strict compliance with quarantine as well as active monitoring of symptoms and the person must remain completely asymptomatic during the entire period. Anyone who develops symptoms or is unable to commit to active monitoring of symptoms must continue to follow the 14-day quarantine option.
Active Monitoring: the individual must actively monitor symptoms and take their temperature once daily. If even mild symptoms develop or the individual has a temperature of 100.0 F, they must immediately self-isolate, contact the public health authority overseeing their quarantine and get tested.
1. 7 days of strict quarantine, release on Day 8 IF:
A test (either PCR or antigen) taken on Day 5 or later is negative AND
The individual has not experienced any symptoms up to that point AND
The individual conducts active monitoring through Day 1
The individual has not experienced any symptoms up to that point AND
The individual conducts active monitoring through Day 14
No test is necessary under this option
The individual has experienced ANY symptoms during the quarantine period EVEN if they have a negative COVID-19 test;
OR
The individual indicates they are unwilling or unable to conduct active monitoring
Our nurses, Lynn Lucier and Katelyn Griffin, are happy to answer any questions you may have at any time, and we will continue to provide you with updates as they become available.
Thanks,
Jeff
A MESSAGE FROM THE ECMS HEALTH OFFICE
Parents & Guardians,
The Department of Public Health requires an influenza vaccine for every student. This requirement was put in place to reduce the overall impact of respiratory illness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Students need to receive an influenza vaccine by December 31, 2020, unless they have a signed, written statement for medical or religious exemption. This is a requirement for ALL students in hybrid or remote learning models.
Please get your child immunized as soon as possible and send documentation to:
Katelyn Griffin, RN & Lynn Lucier, RN
Email: katelyn_griffin@sudbury.k12.ma.us or lynn_lucier@sudbury.k12.ma.us
FAX: 978-443-1098
Mail: 22 Pratts Mill Road, Sudbury, MA, 01776
We would appreciate documentation being submitted by Dec. 23rd before the winter break.
MASK AND HAND SANITIZER COLLECTION DRIVE
Curtis is hosting a Mask and Hand Sanitizer Collection Drive for the Worcester Free Medical Clinics. The donated masks and hand sanitizers will help prevent the spread of COVID to local uninsured/underinsured communities. The drive, organized by the Curtis Angels, will run through Friday, January 11th.
We are asking for donations of reusable, washable high quality cloth masks, triple layer or more, per CDC guidelines. Some affordable sources of masks include Old Navy/Gap, Vvupic and Amazon. We are also asking for small- and medium-size bottles of hand sanitizer. A collection bin will be located in the front lobby at Curtis.
Please contact Curtis Angels Advisor Ivar Henningson if you have questions about the Mask Collection Drive. Thank you in advance for your support.
FOOD DRIVE FOR THE SUDBURY COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY

ECMS PRIVATE SCHOOL APPLICATION PROCEDURES AND GUIDELINES
If your child is applying to private school, please contact your child’s grade level school counselor so that we can help facilitate the process. To ensure that this process is efficient and expedient, please follow these guidelines:
Prior to submitting any forms (electronically or on paper), please ensure that your child contacts their teachers and the counselor to ask for their recommendation.
Most schools are using on-line platforms for applications and recommendations. Please notify the grade counselor which schools your child is applying to and the platforms that these schools use.
If the applications require paper forms, they should be dropped off at the ECMS main office to the attention of the grade level counselor. Please do not send any paper recommendation forms directly to teachers; the grade level counselor will distribute these to teachers.
In order to send records and recommendations to the private school, we must have a signed release from a parent or guardian. This is usually provided with the private school application form or may be part of the on-line platform.
We request that you submit all forms as early as possible to allow teachers and counselors ample time to complete recommendations. Please be aware of the following timeline for submitting forms to the grade level counselor:
By January 5, 2020 for a February 1, 2021 deadline
In early spring after you have heard from the school’s admissions department, please contact the grade level counselor to inform us of the application outcome and private school decisions for your child.
Please direct any questions about the status of recommendations to the following counselors.
Procedure for applications requiring direct mail:
Include a large (10 x 13) stamped standard mailing envelope for each school with the forms, so that we are able to mail them out quickly when the applications are complete.
On each mailing envelope, include a postage amount of $2.94.
Print the specific name and address to whom we are directing the application.
Leave the return address blank as we will fill this in indicating that the materials came from Curtis.
- Ivar Henningson, Grade 6 ext. 7511
- Terry Miller, Grade 7 ext. 7513
- Jennifer Hymes / Alyssa O'Hare, Grade 8 ext. 7510
Thank you very much for your assistance and cooperation with this private school application process.

PROCEDURE FOR STUDENT DISMISSALS DURING THE DAY
If a student has an appointment during a hybrid remote day or Sudbury Remote, please leave a detailed message on the absentee and tardy line (978-443-1071, press 1) with their departure time, approximate time that the student will be returning to remote learning, as well as the reason for dismissal.
For students who are "in-house" who have appointments during the day, please continue to have them bring a note to the front office first thing in the morning. The note should include time of departure and reason. Parents must come into the front office to sign the student out. The student can sign themselves back in when they return.

The CPO needs YOUR help!
Has your child used a standing desk while at school? Shot hoops using one of the new basketball nets? Enjoyed an enrichment activity in past years? The CPO funded all of these—and more! Consider grabbing some friends and planning an online fundraiser for Curtis this year—could be a traditional auction or any other creative idea you have. Please volunteer to help so the CPO can continue to provide enrichment activities and fund classroom resources and initiatives not covered in the SPS budget. Thank you!
Save the date: The next CPO meeting will be on February 10th, at 7:00pm.
Direct Appeal
Thank you to the many families who have already contributed to the 2020–2021 CPO Direct Appeal! Your donations help to provide enrichment activities and fund classroom resources and initiatives NOT covered in the SPS budget. The CPO's fundraising efforts this year will go towards additional standing chairs and active boards for the classrooms.
The Direct Appeal is the only fundraiser this year, and our goal is to get 100% participation! If you have not yet donated, please take a moment to donate online. Simply click here or make a donation. We suggest a $75 donation—but no donation is too small—and all are appreciated. Thanks in advance for your contribution!
