University of Georgia coming to Athens
History of the School
A land grant was offered in 1784 to the founders of UGA to create a public university in Georgia. In 1785, the school was created. It was the first public university in the country. It was founded to provide education and improve the economy in the state.
Franklin College
In 1801, the school opens the Franklin College building to its first students.
Women Attend
In 1918, women are allowed to attend the university for the first time.
Civil Rights
In 1961, Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes are the first African American students to attend UGA.
