This week in 7th grade ELA we got back into the swing of things after a nice long Thanksgiving Break. We dove back into reading The Giver and as a student said this week, “this book is weird, but I’m not bored.” This book explores a world that doesn’t exist and it really makes the kids think deeper about our world and the imaginary one that they are creating in writing. We started the editing process this week with our articles of the week to get used to reading our writing out loud and listening for mistakes as opposed to just looking for them. This will continue to be a focused on area of writing and editing. We finished up our Dystopian short story brainstorming and outlining and next week we jump into our rough drafts of writing the story. I look forward to seeing all of their very creative ideas come to life in their stories.
Enjoy the weekend and stay warm!

Pre Algebra has spent time this week really focusing on reviewing integer operations. It is such an important skill to master for them to be successful in their entire math career. Next week we will begin work on Linear Non-proportional Equations. This will again involve slope of a line and graphing. My goal is to have graphing all wrapped up before Christmas. Have a great weekend! Mrs. Seitz
Algebra worked on graphing and writing linear equations in slope intercept form, standard form, and point slope form. We used real world examples and created graphs to represent these situations. It was a good way to visually understand what a y intercept is. Next week we will look at the relationship of parallel and perpendicular lines. We will also begin reviewing for the graphing unit test. It was nice to meet with many of you during conferences. Have a great weekend.
Please contact me via e-mail if you have any questions or concerns.

This week in science, students took a quiz on cell transport, the first section of chapter 4. They learned some different pathways molecules can take to enter or exit a cell. Students also performed a week long lab called the Egg-citing Egg-speriment. A raw egg was placed in vinegar for a day, corn syrup the next day and finally water. Ask your child what happened each day! They all did an excellent job thinking there way through this lab. The lab report will be do on Tuesday next week.
We also began to dive into cell energy. When we are done with this section, students will be able to describe how photosynthesis and cellular respiration are connected.
Have a great weekend!

This week in U.S History the 7th graders began looking into lesson 2 which focused on the “Trail of Tears.” This lesson discussed how the government paid Native Americans who had built communities in the South to up and move to a new Indian Territory in present day Oklahoma. Many of the tribes felt pressured to up and move. The Cherokee felt they were protected and as the Supreme Court to rule in their favor. The courts did, but President Jackson wouldn’t enforce the ruling so they were rounded up by the army and forced to move. Over 4000 Cherokee died on the march to the new land. Next week we will look at Jackson and his struggle with the National Bank. We will discuss why he feels that government shouldn’t have a bank and the impact that comes with it. Have a great weekend. This week in health the 7th graders continued their Bullying Unit with a powerful activity called “Taking a Walk in Someone Else’s Shoes.” Each student had a unique characteristic placed on their back, one that cannot be changed and characteristics that people are typically bullied for. The students were told to walk around the room and treat others as if they had this specific characteristic. The majority of the students did not appreciate being treated this way even for five minutes much less the rest of their lives. The students reflected after the activity and it was a wonderful eye opener for them. This sparked a lot of thought about how they will treat others in the future. They also created skits from a number of bullying scenarios and learned how to stand up to a bullying, speak up to a bully, and report a bullying behavior.
This week in PE the students finished up the Badminton Unit with a double elimination tournament. This activity generated a lot of competitiveness and excitement!
Have a fantastic weekend!
