BARKSDALE ELEMENTARY
April 12, 2018
News from the principal
We have exciting news to share with you!
Barksdale is going to get a whole new look for the 2018-2019 school year! Recently the Plano ISD School Board approved the budget for refurbishment. Some of the things that you will see are full renovation of the kitchen, new flooring throughout the building, upgraded teachers’ lounge and workroom, new metal student lockers, all new cabinetry, new furniture throughout the building, fresh paint, new playgrounds, upgrades to the HVAC units, chillers, boilers, electrical, plumbing, and more.
There will also be two additional classrooms added due to our projected enrollment. Construction on the two new classrooms will begin shortly. Teachers are busy cleaning out their classrooms after school and on the weekends, as everything in the entire school has to be removed starting June 1. We could not be more excited to see the new look, but we do know that we will have to make adjustments along the way. We will continue to update you throughout this process. Please know that none of this will impact your child’s learning this school year. They will begin working on everything over the summer, with the exception of the two new classrooms.

We have been busy during PE and Fitness this month. The third - fifth graders just completed the annual physical fitness assessment called the FITNESSGRAM. We were very pleased to see a lot of growth from the beginning of the year.
What is the Physical Fitness Assessment?
Annually, Plano ISD assesses the physical fitness of students enrolled in grades 3-12 who are enrolled in a physical education course or a course for which physical education credit is awarded. Each district across the state of Texas will use the FITNESSGRAM physical fitness test instrument to assess each student’s health-related fitness.
FITNESSGRAM was developed by The Cooper Institute and uses research based criterion-referenced standards. These standards, called Healthy Fitness Zones, determine student’s fitness levels based on what is optimal for good health. The assessment measures three components of health-related physical fitness that have been identified as important to overall health and function:
• Aerobic capacity
• Body composition
• Muscular strength, endurance and flexibility.
FITNESSGRAM tests all students regardless of age, gender or ability. Students are encouraged to be self-aware of health-related fitness and take responsibility by setting personal fitness goals. When students focus on the process of doing their personal best, a more positive lifelong impact is achieved.
What are we doing now?
This week we have been working on a jump rope unit. During the unit, the boys and girls work on coordination, improving cardiovascular endurance, and new, challenging ways to turn the rope. Our unit will culminate with an inspiring visit from the jump rope team at Ashley Elementary School.
PE Reminder:
As the weather warms up, please remind your child to come to PE in the proper shoes each day. If your child comes to school in sandals or flip flops, please send sneakers for PE. The proper shoes help reduce the risk of injury.
