Principal's Corner
It is hard to believe that it is already January and we are embarking on 3rd Quarter (2nd Semester). Your children have been working so hard all throughout the year a We know that with the winter weather here it is getting colder and often times we are faced with challenging weather conditions. Please remember that school officially starts at 8:55 am. Please drop off your students no earlier than 8:55am so that we can make sure they are safe and warm in the school building.

Winter Weather Advisory
Our winter months are here and the temperatures have begun to fall. We want to make sure our students are bundled up and at school on time all day every day. It is time to break out those heavy coats, boots, gloves, thermals, hats, and scarves as the wind chill is dropping; especially for students who must wait at bus stops and walk to school. If you are in need of any cold weather resources, we are committed to using our resources to assist you. So please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Cherry, Mr. Jackson, or any other member of administrative team as all inquiries are confidential.
Please note you will be notified via official KCPS (Missouri) district wide call blasts, text messages, and local news postings regarding ANY and ALL inclement weather alerts that may impact official early release times, school delays, or cancellations. As a reminder, signing students our before 4PM or school absence due to cold weather without an official KCPS notification WILL drop a student's attendance percentage and not be excused.
It is imperative that you update all of your contacts in our system to ensure that you are able to receive this information in a timely manner. If you have not received any notifications or are uncertain if school is in session, please feel free to call the school at 816-418-4825 between 8:30AM and 9AM to verify. Also, if you prefer social media platforms to stay updated, follow us on our official KCPS and Wheatley Elementary twitter page listed below to receive real time updates.

Character Trait of the Month
Please help us instill this character trait in your student by asking them questions about our monthly character trait.
- What does it mean?
- How do you display this character trait?
Attendance Matters ALL Day, EVERY Day!
Wheatley's school day begins promptly each day at 9AM and ends at 4PM. Students dismissed anytime before 4PM, regardless of reason, will have instructional minutes deducted and their attendance record will reflect a decreased attendance percentage. A student is tardy when they arrive 1-15 minutes after 9AM and are considered late anytime after 9:16AM. Both instances deduct instructional minutes from the student and negatively impact student's attendance percentage.
Our goal this year is to 90/90 (90% of students present 90% of the year)! In our commitment to this goal, every 1st Thursday of the month we will recognize students and families who have maintained 100% attendance (no late arrivals, early dismissals, no absences) for the previous month through an EXCLUSIVE invitation to "Attendance Night."
Additionally, we understand that circumstances may arise throughout the year that may hinder a student's attendance, so we ask that you please notify the front office as soon as possible. In a collaborative effort, we will work to find a solution when necessary and do all that we can to support your students daily attendance.
