3rd & 4th Grade Updates
Week of February 27
A few reminders as we say goodbye to February and enter March.
Hopefully everyone has been reading as a part of this year's Read-a-Thon, which ends this Friday. I was surprised last week at how many students said they do not have Spanish books or access to them at home. Please review my previous Smore newsletters with suggestions, get the Epic! reading app, or visit your local library. I cannot emphasize how important it is for our students to keep reading in both languages in and out of school. If you need suggestions, please let me know.
This Friday, March 3, we will be celebrating the end of the Read-a-Thon and Dr. Seuss's birthday (March 2) with a pajama day read-in starting at 1:30pm. Both grades will be reading to the PreK students at 2:00pm. If they have favorite books in Spanish which they would like to share, please have them bring it to school.
Ash Wednesday & Lent
This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, beginning the Lenten season. We will have mass at 9:00am in addition to our regularly scheduled Thursday mass. Please join us if you can!
Registration Reminder
Feb. 27: Registration Opens for All Families
Current families will receive a free month of tuition for any family who is referred and enrolled for the 2017-18 school year!
Have a wonderful week!
Practicing Verb Conjugations
Teamwork in Action
Reviewing What We Learned Last Week
In Our Classes
Third Grade will be reading a selection from Sara, Plain and Tall. We will be working on verb conjugations in the present tense, with a particular focus on stem-changing verbs.
Fourth Grade read about Mount Everest last week --and had lots of questions that I hope spurred some investigation at home. We will continue working with this information text this week in addition to working with verbs. Fourth grade's next spelling test is this Friday.
Both grades will continue working on opinion writing and begin their rough drafts this week. We will complete an example in class prior to students working on their own topic of choice.
Math
My math group continues working angles, lines and two-dimensional shapes. We are paying special attention to using a protractor to measure angles accurately and identify types of angles (obtuso, agudo, recto or llano). We are also reviewing other topics every class period, including money, whole numbers, multiplication, division, etc.
Science
Third Grade has been learning about butterflies. We watched El vuelo de las mariposas on Friday and today about the scientist Dr. Fred Urquhart, who identified the migration routes of the Monarch butterflies. We are reading a short story about the butterfly migration and working on symmetry activities with butterflies. Later this week, we will continue working with different types of energy.
Fourth Grade is working on sound energy. Last week we learned about the different types of sound waves and we will continue with this during the current week.
