Thomas Jefferson Facts
By Aidan Critchley
Thomas Jefferson was the third president of the United states of America.
He beat Adams in the election by 8 points. The final score was 73 to 65.
He was the second vice president of the U.S.
Back in the 1700's, in the presidential elections, the winner was president. The second place winner was vice president. Jefferson lost to Adams 71 to 68.
Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase while he was president.
The Louisiana Purchase almost doubled the size of the U.S. He originally just wanted to buy New Orleans from the French, but ended up buying all of Louisiana Territory. He bought it for 15 million dollars.
He wrote the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution.
He also wanted to add a part outlawing slavery in the Constitution, but the southern states would not join the Union if they had to get rid of their slaves. It is ironic that he owned slaves, too.
Jefferson owed money.
As rich as you would think he is, he died about 2 million dollars in debt.
He died on July 4th, 1826.
Jefferson died on the same day as John Adams, but a few hours before Adams. Jefferson's last words are unclear, but it they are believed to be: "Is it the fourth yet?" When in fact it was the 3rd of July.
