Bullying Prevention Month
The devastation this past week from Hurricane Matthew has touched each of us in different ways and may be hard for some to comprehend. This is a time to come together and support each other. With that in mind, if you have resources and support you wish to give to families affected by the flood, contact one of our community schools or your local Department of Social Services to offer your support to a local family that may have been negatively affected by Hurricane Matthew.
I enjoyed the opportunity to visit with many of you at our recent Progress Report Pick-up and PTO Meeting. I want to thank parents and guardians for supporting your children during Progress Report Pick-up. The feedback we have received after Progress Report Pick-up told us that parents appreciated the opportunity to meet with their child's teacher to set goals for the school year.
The procedures and daily activities of your child's classroom should be familiar and comfortable to them by this time in the school year. If your child is still experiencing anxiety or if there is any type of concerns, please communicate your concern(s) to your child's teacher. I am also more than willing to be a part of those conversations. Please don't ever hesitate to contact us, just as we need your help, we would like to help you.
Parent Involvement is the key to student success. Talking to your child and showing interest in what they learned about school shows them that you think school is important. The more you show your child that you are interested in what they do at school the more successful your child will be.
The Pollocksville Elementary School staff is thankful for parents and guardians who have a strong commitment to their children and their children's education.
At anytime if you have questions or concerns our door is always open.

October is...
Every year the U.S. president signs an executive order designating the month of October as
National Italian American Heritage Month. Coinciding with the festivities surrounding Columbus Day, the proclamation is recognition of the many achievements, contributions, and successes of Americans ofItalian descent as well as Italians in America.
Over 5.4 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 1992. Today there are over 26 million Americans of Italian descent in the United States, making them the fifth largest ethnic group. The country was even named after an Italian, the explorer and geographer Amerigo Vespucci.
As Americans, we acknowledge the determination and achievements of Italians
within the United States. It is our understanding that during the month of October, Italian Americans are given recognition because they play a vital role in altering the political, social,
and economic aspect of our country. Current changes can be recognized due to the help of actors like Leonardo Dicaprio, and Robert De Nero. It is a month filled with celebration and festivities. However, we should also understand the obstacles that were faced by many Italians during the 1900s such as being paid low wages. Unfortunately, the devastation of the First World War impacted the American society, thus causing some of us to characterize Italians as criminals. Overall we should be more optimistic and take our time to celebrate this month in unison.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month
National Disability Employment Awareness Month celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and educates about the value of a diverse workforce inclusive of their skills and talents.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), also referred to in America as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), is an annual international health campaign organized by major rest cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.
National Fire Prevention Week - October 9 -15 - Don't Wait Check the date
This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” represents the final year of our three-year effort to educate the public about basic but essential elements of smoke alarm safety.
Why focus on smoke alarms three years in a row? Because NFPA’s survey data shows that the public has many misconceptions about smoke alarms, which may put them at increased risk in the event of a home fire. For example, only a small percentage of people know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced. Read more from NFPA Journal.
As a result of those and related findings, we’re addressing smoke alarm replacement this year with a focus on these key messages:
