Abolition
In 1828 he took a job as an editor at Genius of Emancipation and that marked his initiation into the Abolitionist movement. At 25 years old, he joined the American Colonization Society- later he viewed them as promoters of slavery with wanting to send blacks to the west coast of Africa. In 1830 he then broke away from the American Colonization Society and started his own abolitionist paper, The Liberator. The motto was - "Our country is the world- our countrymen are mankind." In 1832 and 1833 he helped form the New England Antislavery Society and he traveled to England and founded the American Antislavery Society.
Abolitionist Movement
The movement emerged in the 1830's, in which Garrison is considered to be the prime organizer of. The goal of the Abolitionist Movement was to get IMMEDIATE emancipation of all slaves and to end all racial discrimination and segregation. The Abolitionist Movement itself was, a movement to end slavery. The movement was fueled mainly by the religious fervor of the Second Great Awakening, this promoted many people to advocate for emancipation on religious grounds.
His Impact
His supporters deserted him because he was a pacifist and was unwilling to take political action. Even though most abolitionists agreed with the Union and were "for" it, he believed the United Constitution was "pro-slavery", so he was AGAINST the Union. When the Civil War broke out he continued throughout it to criticize the Constitution. When the war came to a close in 1865 Garrison lived his dream in the 13th amendment.
