What's Happening in PE?
The next couple weeks we will be working on juggling. We will primarily use scarves, but will progress to smaller items if possible. This is a great activity for cross body movements and hand-eye coordination. We will then move on to everybody's favorite PE activity, the parachute. It will be a fun few weeks in PE and we are excited as we progress to warmer weather and 4th quarter!

Mrs. Leeper’s Readers
Many of my students have been enjoying various books from High Noon Books that are phonics-based, high interest books. These fantasy books are full of adventure and the kids love them! The students enjoy the content and it’s a great practice of concentrated phonics patterns. My fourth grade students are enjoying one of my personal favorites, Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. This is helping us become more fluent readers and is great for comprehension. The kids are doing great! The more they read, the more fluent they become!
5th and 6th Grade Band
Both bands are learning more about tetra scales, the building block of all major scales. We have been taking 2 minutes every day to master this skill. After daily drilling, the students take a test and compare pretest and post test scores. The class goal is to get higher scores on the post test. Both classes have completed Level 1, scale tone half steps. 5th grade band pretest, 2 people scored 90% or higher; post test 10 students scored 90% or higher. 6th grade pretest, 5 people scored 90% or above’ post test 15 people scored 90% or above. Keep up the good work!!.
The date has now been set for the concerts connected to our Peter R. Marsh Middle School Grant. We are required to provide three concerts for senior citizens in our community. The band students and residents will also have time to visit after each concert.
The first concert will take place on Wednesday, April 10th at 10:30 am in the Nodaway Holt Elementary Gym. The second concert will be on Thursday, April 11th at 11am at Oak Pointe Assisted Living, 817 S Country Club Road, Maryville. The third concert is also on Thursday, April 11th at 1:15 at the Nodaway Nursing Home, 22371 Highway 46, Maryville.
Families of the band students are welcome to attend any of the band concerts. We are all excited about this opportunity to share our music with the Nodaway Holt community.
What's Happening in Art?
All of the artwork has been delivered to NWMSU for the "I Will Listen" exhibit. This exhibit is done each year in honor of mental health awareness. This year, every single Art student, from grades K-12 and even some that do not take an Art class, have entered a piece of artwork. These students have poured their heart and souls into these pieces, and I could not be more proud of them. The artwork accepted into the show, will be juried, and there will also be a community vote. The exhibit, and your chance to vote, will be March 28th, 2024. I will be sending a letter home with more information. I hope you will consider coming and supporting the amazing work that your student has done.
Why do I teach your student about expressing their feelings through art? Honestly, I think this is the most important project that these kids do all year, in my class. Learning to use art as a healthy outlet, rather than resorting to unhealthy outlets, is crucial. Art serves as a vital outlet for creative expression and emotional release, offering individuals a means to channel their inner thoughts and feelings constructively. Through various mediums such as painting, drawing, writing, and music, individuals can explore their innermost emotions, cope with stress, and process complex experiences. Engaging in artistic endeavors fosters self-discovery, promotes mindfulness, and enhances overall well-being. Moreover, art encourages problem-solving skills, cultivates imagination, and builds confidence. By embracing art as a healthy outlet, individuals can find solace, inspiration, and a profound sense of fulfillment in their lives.
Sing Along in Music!
Believe or not, but it’s time to be thinking about choosing songs for or spring concert. It will be held May 9. There will be a good variety of music to listen to. You might even hear some kazoos and see some choreography.
Right now we are working on hearing and reading rhythms in first grade. Second and third grades are learning new pitches to read on the staff. Fourth grade continues getting better on their recorders and fifth and sixth grades are practicing good vocal technique and what they need to do to perform it and not just sing it.
