Pennsbury Students Perform at School Board Meeting
This month's school board meeting was graced by the talented students from Edgewood and Quarry Hill Elementary schools. They opened the meeting with a powerful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, followed by "Si Si Sote" by Andy Beck, a song they had the honor of performing at the prestigious 2024 OAKE National Conference in Chicago this spring. Their performance was a testament to their hard work and the high standards of our schools.
Seventeen singers from Edgewood and Quarry Hill were in the Children's Choir, one singer from Charles Boehm was in the Youth Choir, and one Pennsbury High School senior was in the Chamber Choir. The singers had three days of intense rehearsals in Chicago with their guest conductor, concluding with a performance at the prestigious Chicago Symphony Center on March 16.
Thank you to our student performers and choir teachers Jennifer Kimock and Jennifer Stephens for starting the meeting with their beautiful performance!
Charles Boehm Students Present at School Board Meeting
Students from Charles Boehm Middle School proudly represented their school at this month's School Board Action Meeting. Students Lilly Dillon, Samantha Braun, Allison Bennett, Aiden Guan, Leila Curtis, Olivia Descotte, Amelia Prokopiak, Maggie McGinty, and Micah Sharlin updated the school board on all of the exciting events and learning taking place at Charles Boehm.
Riding Smart: What's My Name Presents Ride Share Safety at Pennsbury
As the school year begins to wind down and the Class of 2024 looks toward the future, the senior class attended an important assembly this week focused on ride-share safety, presented by the non-profit organization What's My Name. This initiative aims to equip students with essential knowledge and tools to ensure their safety while using ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft.
What's My Name has a commendable mission rooted in addressing the safety concerns surrounding ride-sharing. The organization was founded by Seymour and Marci Josephson after the 2019 death of their 21-year-old daughter, Samantha (Sami), at the hands of a man posing as an Uber driver. Their mission? Raise awareness about potential risks associated with ride-sharing and empower users to take proactive measures to stay safe.
During the assembly, students received valuable insights into various safety practices, including verifying the identity of drivers, sharing trip details with trusted contacts, and utilizing in-app safety features. It is imperative that users ask the driver, "What's My Name?" and remember Sami's.
Stop - Review Safety Features
Ask - "What's my name?"
Match - License plate, display
Inform - Share Details
After the presentation, students signed a pledge to ask, "What's My Name?" and remember Sami's.
We want to thank Seymour and Marci Josephson and the What's My Name organization for sharing their stories with our students and helping to foster a culture of safety consciousness.
Quarry Hill Students Excel at K'Nex Challenge
Two teams of students from Quarry Hill Elementary recently attended the Fab Lab Center as finalists for the 2024 K'Nex Challenge. Out of 200 teams from school districts all over Bucks County, Quarry Hill had two teams advance to the finals!
The challenge this year: Help our Pennsylvania farmers by creating an agricultural robot, or a different type of "high-tech farming" equipment that they could use. Their blue print design, research, and digital presentation excelled. One team, The Corn Carvers, won first place and will advance to the State Finals in Harrisburg this May to represent all of Bucks County! Congratulations to coaches Becky Obert-Thorn, Kim Walter, and all students who participated in this impressive event. Good luck at States!
- Team Corn Carvers (first place): Cooper Prentice, Mikey Perate, Riaan Patel, and Mason Clancy
- Team Cucumber Quad (finalists): Eva Kulessa, Brinn Mooney, Maggie Morris, and Reilly O'Brien
Pennsbury Students Come Together for Elementary Honors Festival
On April 12 and 13, select fifth-grade instrumentalists from each Pennsbury elementary school participated in the Pennsbury Elementary Honors Festival. This two-day festival involved students rehearsing and performing alongside peers from across the district in the Honors Band and Honors Orchestra. Both ensembles performed their music for the public at Pennsbury High School East. This year's ensembles were under the direction of Dr. Scott Watson (band) and Ms. Melissa Brun (orchestra). Thank you to our instrumental music staff for providing our young musicians with this opportunity to meet and perform with students from each elementary school!

Afton SPARK Expo
On Thursday, April 18, Afton Elementary School hosted its second annual SPARK Expo. Students from all grades got to show off their own unique projects and share what they've learned this year with friends and family. Many projects were interactive, and guests were able to play student-made games such as mini-golf, basketball, and more. SPARK teachers Mrs. Slota and Mr. F were "SPARKletastic"!
Pennsbury introduced SPARK as a fifth elementary school Special in the 2019-20 school year. SPARK stands for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) through Perseverance, Application, Resilience, and Kinetic Knowledge. The program is designed to teach 21st Century Skills (collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking) at the elementary level to foster strong development of these skills throughout the educational journey.

They also shared fun facts that they learned about their country. Students enjoyed finding commonalities between their cultures. A SWAP Meet, short for "Swap and Share" or "Stuff We All Possess," is a great way for people to exchange gently used items they no longer need for things they can use or want. These events are environmentally friendly and promote sustainability by reducing waste and promoting the reuse of items. Here's how a SWAP meeting typically works:
- Gathering Items: Participants gather items from their homes that are in good condition but are no longer needed or wanted. These items can include clothing, toys, household items, books, and more. The idea is to bring items that someone else might find valuable.
- Sorting and Display: When you arrive at the SWAP meeting, items are usually sorted into categories and displayed in an organized manner. This makes it easier for participants to find what they're looking for.
- Giving and Getting: Participants can either give, get, or both. If you have items to give, you can place them on designated tables or in specific areas for others to take. If there are items you need or want, you can browse through the items brought by other participants and take what you need.
- No Money Exchange: The key principle of a SWAP meeting is that no money is exchanged. Everything is based on the principle of sharing and swapping items freely.
- Unclaimed Items: After the SWAP meeting, any unclaimed items are often donated to local charities or organizations, ensuring that even items that weren't swapped find a useful purpose. You can take it to the nearest location and support another person by donating any items you have left.
SWAP meetings are a win-win for both individuals and the environment. They promote recycling and reusing, reduce waste, and provide an opportunity for community members to connect while helping one another. It's a great way to declutter your home and acquire items you need without spending money.
We hope you can join us. If you would like to join us, click here and complete the Google Form.
