Strep Throat
- Bacterial Disease
- Common in teens
- Strep is short for Streptococcus
- Found in the throat and nose
- can spread by contact of mucus
Lyme Disease
- Bacterial Disease
- When someone is bitten by an infected tick
- best way to protect yourself from this is avoid tick bites
- fever, chills, and body aches
Bacterial Meningitis
- Bacterial Disease
- Infection of the fluid in the spinal cord and the fluid around the brain
- need medical attention immediately
- fever, headache, vomiting, and a stiff neck
Tuberculosis
- Bacterial Disease
- infection of the lungs
- transmitted when droplets from an infect persons lungs cough or sneeze
Treating Bacterial Diseases
- If the doctor determines that you have a bacterial disease, he or she may treat your infection with an antibiotic a drug that inhibits or kills bacteria
Common Cold
- Viral Disease
- sneezing, sore throats, runny noses, coughing, chest congestion, fever, headaches, and muscle aches
Influenza
- Viral Disease
- the upper respiratory system
- high fever, sore throat, headache, and a cough
Pneumonia
- Viral Disease
- elderly people or people who have heart disease or breathing problems
- many people die each year from pneumonia
Hepatitis
- Viral Disease
- Infect the liver can cause hepatitis
- Hepatitis A transmits in human waste
- Hepatitis B more severe than A transmits in blood or sexual contant
- Hepatitis C more severe than A and B transmits in blood or sexual contant
Treating Viral Disease
Over the counter meds will make you feel better but not cure the virus
Preventing Infectious Diseases
- Wash your hands
- Don't share items
- cook and store food properly
- avoid close contact with sick people
- stay home when you dont feel good
- eat well balanced meals
