6th Grade Math/Matemáticas de 6º grado
We have been having a blast in 6th grade math getting to know one another, learning to work in groups, and developing a growth mindset! The year began with many activities that helped us to establish classroom and group norms. Some of our most important ideas for working well in math class include appreciating our mistakes as learning opportunities, showing respect for each other and our math tools, talking about math every day, and working together to solve problems!
Our first unit in 6th grade math has been all about geometry. We are discovering area of polygons by decomposing, rearranging, and composing shapes. We are also working on surface area and volume of 3D figures. Students have learned how to use tools such as tracing paper, rulers, graph-paper, pattern blocks, and post-its to solve problems. What is so fun about this unit is that students can choose whatever strategy and tools they like best in order to solve problems. We all learn and see things in different ways and 6th graders are beginning to understand that we can learn from each other and help each other grow when we share our ideas.
Please remember to attend the Math Recognition Night/Family Math Night on October 17th starting at 5:30 - 8 at Freedom Middle School to learn more about our new math curriculum!
Our 7th graders are off to an amazing start to this school year. We have been learning about how to determine if figures or images are scaled copies of one another through many various partner and group activities. We are pleased to see that students have such a positive attitude towards learning! Students have been working hard to calculate scale factors (multiplication rules) between figures or images. The unit then leads into scaled drawings with the students working with scales on map (finding distance) and buildings. This is great practice for when the students work with ratios and proportions later in the school year.
8th grade math is off to a great start working with congruent figures and transformations. This first unit focuses on what it means for two figures to be congruent and how we can use reflection, rotation and translation (flips, turns and slides) to verify if two figures are the same. Everyday we do activities that focus on communicating our mathematical ideas with our classmates and sharing our thinking out loud. We will be wrapping up our first unit next week and jumping in to Dilations and Similar Figures next.
