Principal's Message
Dear Parents/Carers,
As you will be aware we have been working towards re-establishing our school code of conduct and developing a school-wide Essential Agreement. We have been working with the children through the buddy program to find out their thoughts about what school should look like, what their rights are and how they should be conducting themselves throughout the school day in all aspects of the curriculum – this includes the playground. We are keen to find out what you think. Please spend 10 minutes and complete the online survey with your thoughts and ideas so that we can incorporate these into the Essential Agreement. The survey is simple and should not take long to complete. We really need your voice in developing the school wide document.
Follow the link to complete your survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6ZPBJ83
The new morning routine seems to be working really well, with children engaged in their classroom program straight away from 9am. The logistics around supervision of the children is much better with the new arrangements in place. I would like to remind you that you are more than welcome to continue to gather on the playground before and after school as usual.
THREE-WAY CONFERENCES:
Three-Way Conferences were a massive success and a fantastic opportunity to hear how the children across the school are progressing with their learning goals. For the second time we ran some of the conferences in the afternoon session – like last time if you have any feedback about the structures please do let me know:

KIDSMATTER:
Social development involves learning the values, knowledge and skills that enable children to relate to others effectively and to contribute in positive ways to family, school and the community. This kind of learning is passed on to children directly by those who care for and teach them, as well as indirectly through social relationships within the family or with friends, and through children’s participation in the culture around them. Through their relationships with others and their growing awareness of social values and expectations, children build a sense of who they are and of the social roles available to them. As children develop socially, they both respond to the influences around them and play an active part in shaping their relationships.

UNIFORM:
Just a reminder that there are expectations around our uniform. It has been noted recently - mostly due to the swimming program - that children are wearing a variety of beanies in the school yard. Beanies are part of our uniform but should be navy blue. Please support the school uniform policy – which can be found on our website – by ensuring your child is wearing the correct items.

The Little School on the Hill
Mini Mathematicians and Little Scientists/Big Science Programs at John Monash Science School
Eight very lucky students from Y5 have had the privilege of taking part in unique programs at JMSS. Every second Wednesday afternoon their dedicated parents transport the troupe to the open-plan high school, and stand back as they crunch through cerebrally challenging conundrums with the support of senior students.
James M, Caleb T, Isa S and Phyllis T have enjoyed the Mini Mathematicians program, where they have already solved codes using a wheel cipher and worked through all the possible arrangements of cards in a deck. (Next step: card counting!)
Meanwhile, Ally T, Theia M, Thomas R and Victor S work in the Little Scientists/Big Science group. They’ve worked on an egg challenge - trying to help it with a soft landing, only to see it SPLATter with the majority of the vehicles. (A whole storey high is a long way!) They also learned about surface area and colour, as well as hydrophobic magic sand (look it up!).
But most of all - they have a lot of fun!
Thanks aplenty to those dedicated parents for taking them there (even though the parking isn’t so close) and Dyon Hunt for organising this special opportunity.

Keep Our Gorillas Alive
The gorillas are part of our family and we need to help protect them! Did you know that gorillas' habitats are being destroyed? This is because of illegal mining for the chemical ‘Coltan’ which is used in mobile phones.
During our excursion to the zoo we found out that we can help by recycling old mobile phones by putting them in the special recycle bins found at the Melbourne Zoo.
Let’s keep our Gorillas alive!
