Thank You for Attending Conferences
EMS hosted 781 conferences! This is 78% of our capacity for conferences (996 total conferences available). Our core teachers' conferences were full on November 24th.
A big "Shout out" to our families of 6th graders: You 95% of all potential conferences!
We are grateful for your partnership and desire to learn about how we offer learning to your student. Thank you for your voice and for asking great questions.
Teen Mental Health and Suicide Prevention: Lessons
During the month of December Mrs. Gundlach (EMS School Counselor) and Ms. Tracy (ESD School Social Worker) will be delivering a Suicide Prevention Lesson in all Specials classes. We recognize that students are faced with an enormous amount of stressors associated with COVID-19, the challenges of distance learning, and more. The lesson will highlight the importance of suicide prevention, and will provide students with information on the warning signs and risk factors of suicide, as well as other mental health challenges. Students will also learn how to seek help if they or someone they know is struggling with their mental health.
You are welcome to preview the lesson here: Suicide Prevention Lesson PowerPoint
Due to the sensitive nature of this topic, we will encourage and ask students to turn their cameras on for the duration of the lesson to allow Mrs. Gundlach and Ms. Tracy to monitor students. Students will not be asked to speak if they do not want to. And, if students want to keep their cameras off, we understand, too.
Mrs. Gundlach and Ms. Tracy will visit each class twice (Day One - lesson delivery, Day Two - follow up and questions). The lessons will be delivered on the following dates:
Specials with Ms. Hubbard (6th Grade) - December 9th-10th
Specials with Ms. Rossos (7th Grade) - December 14th-15th
Specials with Mr. Grochowsky (8th Grade) - December 16th-17th
Mrs. Gundlach and Ms. Tracy are trained mental health professionals and will be available to support students individually in Zoom breakout rooms if needed. We encourage parents/guardians to talk with their students about what they learned after the lesson is delivered.
If you do NOT want your child to participate in the Suicide Prevention Lesson, please fill out the Suicide Prevention Lesson Opt-Out Parent/Guardian Form by Tuesday, December 8th. If we do not receive this form from you, we will assume your child has permission to participate in this lesson.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Gundlach (gundlacha@estacada.k12.or.us) or Ms. Tracy (tracys@estacada.k12.or.us).
This Week's SecondStep Life Class Lessons
6th Grade: Making Goals Specific
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will learn how to identify and set achievable goals by making them specific.
Question: Ask your child to tell you about a specific goal they’re interested in working toward and what makes it specific.
7th Grade: Identifying Roadblocks
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will identify and distinguish between internal and external obstacles (or “roadblocks”) that can get in their way when working toward goals.
Question: Tell your child about a roadblock you encountered when you were working toward a goal, and if you had control over the roadblock.
8th Grade: Harnessing My Strengths
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will choose something they’d like to get better at and think about how they could apply their unique strengths to do that.
Question: Help your child make a list of strengths they have. Ask your child about how they could use these to get better at a new skill.

Excused Absences
Regardless of their excused absence, your student will continue to be required to submit any work that was missed at the soonest possible opportunity.
We are flexible and here to support you, but we also need to ensure that your student is providing us with evidence of their progress to meet our essential learning standards.
Unexcused Absences
1.Participate meaningfully in class activities (Fully complete school work, speak up in Zoom sessions, ask questions of their teachers on Zoom and/or in Canvas and finish and submit responses to assignments and/or surveys)
2.Communicate with their teacher or another staff member for each period they attend by responding to their teacher's prompts, sending a private message via Canvas or email about the task or assignment if they are not participating live. This communication is not simply saying, "I'm here." It must show a greater level of engagement to count toward being present that day.
If your student has difficulty accessing videos, Zoom meetings or assignments, please have them email their teacher as soon as possible to receive suggestions for how to resolve the issue, so they can be marked present for that class.
See Teacher contact information below.
