National School Counseling Week was Feb 5-9th! School counselors are here for you... we are thankful for our administration and community support!
Course Selection Meetings
During the month of March, all 9th to 11th grade students will meet one-on-one with their school counselor to review and finalize their course requests for next year.
STUDENTS - If you haven't already, please turn in your Course Request Form (signed by a parent/caregiver) to Mr. Chris in the Counseling Office.
Questions? No need to schedule an appointment! Counselors will meet with students during their Social Science/Health classes on the following dates:
- 9th grade: February 29 - March 6
- 10th grade: March 7 - 13
- 11th grade: March 19 - 22
Academic Planning Night
Did you miss Academic Planning Night with the school counselors on Feb. 22nd? Check out the SLIDES for info on high school & college eligibility requirements, the SAT/ACT exams, the course selection process & more!
DEADLINE TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID APPROACHING!
FAFSA
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) enables families to apply for money to pay for college. To apply, visit the FAFSA website. Steps to apply:
- Create an FSA ID -- one each for parent & student.
- Complete the FAFSA application using your 2022 income tax information.
- Recommended: Within the FAFSA, use the IRS Retrieval Tool to transfer data from your federal income tax returns.
April 2nd is the priority deadline to apply for aid for California public colleges.
CALIFORNIA DREAM ACT
The California Dream Act application enables undocumented students to apply for state financial aid to pay for college. To apply, visit the the Dream Act website.
The deadline to apply is April 2nd, 2024.
CAL GRANT PROGRAMS
Cal Grants provide free money for eligible students attending California colleges. To qualify, you must apply for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application by April 2nd, and meet the financial and GPA eligibility requirements.
After submitting the FAFSA, students should create an account HERE to check their Cal Grant status.
SMUHSD Financial Aid Workshop
Open to all SMUHSD seniors & families. Get hands-on support in filling out the FAFSA or Dream Act application!

SENIORS : Did you miss the Community College registration workshop on February 15th? If so, please follow these Community College Registration Steps to apply. For questions, contact Ms. Murtagh in the Career Center. Students can also drop the Career Center by during FLEX in March to get help with the Community College process!
