EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of May 21, 2018
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,
I want to congratulate our Science Olympiad Team who just got back from the 2018 National Competition in Colorado. I've loved hearing from everyone how beautiful it was! I'll have to go some time I've been told! :) Our amazing team competed against over 1,800 middle and high school students representing teams from all 50 states competed in 23 events covering all areas of science and engineering! Be sure to read the wonderful section below about their National Journey from one of our head coaches herself, Gloria Stathos! Congratulations to the coaches, parent volunteers, and students on all their hard work this year! I know that they will only continue to improve over the years and take these skills with them throughout their lives.
I also want to wish good luck to our Destination Imagination Teams as they traveled to Knoxville, Tennessee today for the Global Finals! These teams include "Savages are Cabbages," "Maze Maniacs," and "D.I. Dare Devils." Here's a look at what they will be doing this week at the Global Finals!
Parents and Students, please be reminded that Finals for Middle and High School Students will continue through Wednesday. Please be sure to look closely at the Finals Schedule below the May Calendar.
LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL BELL SCHEDULE & DISMISSAL
Parents and Students, we will follow a slightly different bell schedule this week. Please refer to the following schedule for your student's class schedule.
- 1st Period: 8:15am - 9:18am
- 2nd Period: 9:22am - 10:20am
- 3rd Period: 10:24am - 11:22am
- 4th Period: 11:26am - 12:24pm

- 6th Period: 1:30pm - 2:28pm
- 7th Period: 2:32pm - 3:30pm
Please be reminded that there are no clubs and STEAM enrichment this week.
Since there are no clubs, we have extended each period and the last school period will end at 3:30pm. The dismissal for 1st grade through middle school will be from the dismissal area next to playground between 3:30pm and 4:00pm. After 4:00pm, students will be taken to cafeteria.
Any parent arriving after 4:00pm should go to cafeteria through the main door to pick up their children. We encourage families to take their children before 4pm. For those who stays after 4pm, after school care will be available up until 6pm.
Even though we have 7th period continuing till 3:30pm, we will still accommodate those elementary families who regularly take their children at 2:45pm during 1st elementary dismissal time. Those families may still take their children at the dismissal area as they do everyday.
Dismissal for pre-k and kindergarten will continue from their regular locations up until 4pm. At 4pm those students will be taken to cafeteria as well.

FSA’s Science Olympiad Team goes to Nationals!
The Science Olympiad team traveled to Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado for the 34th annual Science Olympiad National Tournament. Over 1,800 middle and high school students representing teams from all 50 states competed in 23 events covering all areas of science and engineering.
Seventeen FSA middle school students represented the school and state at the tournament. “Qualifying for Nationals takes a great deal of dedication and effort,” said head coach Pam Walsh. “Each year gets more competitive and this year was exceptionally challenging. Our team’s 35th place among such strong teams was an accomplishment.”
“Our students really have to earn their spot on our team and then work extraordinarily hard to prepare for Nationals,” added head coach Gloria Stathos. “We strive to motivate them, and future team members, by making Nationals an extra special experience.” This year the team’s theme was Science Superheroes. The team logo was inspired by Superman and was used for custom capes the team wore for the Opening Ceremonies. In addition, Art Teacher and Science Olympiad Event Coach Ashley Sanders created a “Guardians of Science” comic strip for the team’s t-shirt, featuring each team member as a unique superhero.
“We had incredible support from our parent coaches,” said Head Coach Gloria Stathos. “Mr. Kersey and Mr. Nash each took two days off of work to drive our building devices and supplies to Colorado. Students spend hundreds of hours building and calibrating these devices and having to take them apart to meet airline regulations and reassembling them for the competition would have been a huge burden.” Five other parent coaches traveled with the team to provide extra support.
Noteworthy performances by team members included:
Crime Busters – coached by Mr. Kuppuswamy
- 12th place – Navina and Njeri
Density Lab – coached by Mr. Ackaramongkolrotn
- 22nd place – Sam and Tejaz
Ecology – coached by Mrs. Butler
- 19th place – Nicole and Ezra
Experimental Design – coached by Mrs. Stathos
- 20th place – Sid, Ashi, and Shivam
Hovercraft – coached by Mr. Kersey
- 22nd Place – Logan and Sid
Road Scholar – coached by Mrs. Stathos
- 13th Place – Sid and Neel
Rocks & Minerals – coached by Mrs. Walsh
- 23rd Place – Epsi and Nick
Density Lab – coached by Mr. Ackaramongkolrotn
- 13th place – Sam and Tejaz
Math League Contest Schoolwide Results – 4th & 5th grade
Math League Contest Schoolwide results are out for elementary grade Math Team students!
Briefly, Math League's 4th and 5th grade contests are some of the first math contests many students will compete in--and the most fun with math they've ever had! Math League Contest is a 35-question, 30-minute, and multiple choice examination. All of the questions cover basic 4th and 5th grade topics, including: properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, time and calendar questions, shapes, perimeter, money, basic ratio and percent, rounding numbers, remainders, integers, and more. These contests challenge students to show their understanding of basic principles through numerical and word problems that encourage an open, flexible approach to problem solving.
Please note that official state-wide results will be announced later in the year.

2018 Summer Rowing Camps
Have you tried every sport and not found your niche or maybe just looking for something new this summer? Why not learn to row? Did you know that we have some FSA Students on the SARC!?
Our programs are for any rising 6th through 12th grader who wishes to learn about the sport of rowing. Campers will learn rowing safety, boat handling, terminology, and beginner thru advanced rowing techniques, all while enjoying a beautifully wooded area along the Chattahoochee River.
Our experienced coaching staff and seasoned athlete-volunteers make the SARC experience like none other. You will learn about the sport through hands on experience in eight and four-man rowing shells with the most continuous time on the water of any rowing camp in the Metro Area. Research has linked rowing to improved academic performance, physiological health, mental health and social interactions. Rowing builds character and promotes leadership skills while working in a team environment and is known to reduce the stress often associated with single player sports.
As the oldest intercollegiate sport in the US, rowing is widely supported throughout the country. In 2017, over 152 Colleges and Universities sponsored a varsity rowing team. Over 41,000 US High School students participate in a school sponsored or club program with a large percent moving on to compete at the college level. Depending on the school size, NCAA ranking and focus, there are tremendous athletic scholarship available from top Universities.
We’ve seen kids who never thought of themselves as having coordination or a competitive drive discover their inner strength, gain confidence, and learn to love the thrill of competition. In short, even the non-athletes learn the value of teamwork and become athletes.
So start your journey and learn to row this summer! Join our half day or full day week long sessions or enroll in a 2 week program.

7th grader seth D. needs your help
"My parents came from a small town in Philippines called Bicol. We went there when I was little and I can still remember the fresh air, the simpleness of life and the purest heart of the kids I played with. But I came back home with a heavy heart thinking of the unfortunate kids my age. As I grew up, I had always thought of a way to give back to the community who gave my parents their simple but happy childhood.
Before my parents immigrated to the United States, they had helped many people in the Philippines thrive. They had given money, food, clothes, and shelter to those who had needed them. Their actions have impacted mine, and to continue their acts of kindness to those who couldn’t support themselves, it would have been only the greatest honor to follow their legacy of helping others.
A few months ago, my parent’s hometown was struck with a volcanic eruption where families were displaced in evacuation centers. The evacuation centers were public schools which disrupted the children’s education for months. Our family purchased second-hand clothes, sent 12 boxes and distributed to the displaced families. My aunt’s foundation also helped in feeding and provided some groceries. As of this time, most of the families have returned home but the help does not stop there….
School will start in June and some kids will not even have papers to write on or shoes to wear or even food to eat. So friends, classmates and families, I humbly ask if you can spare some change to help these kids to provide school supplies and perhaps provide nutritious food. I have set-up a “Go Fund Me”, a “Patreon” and of course a jar in school lobby where you can drop some extra change. We hope that you can help these kids receive the education that they deserve. Thank you. My target for school year 2018-19 is $500 to purchase school supplies for about 100 first graders of Barayong Elementary School.
Here are some photos during our family’s past relief distribution."

reminder: safe driving on campus
Please remember that the speed limit is 15 mph on the school campus and there is a stop sign at both the entrance and exit. We have had some instances where people tend to drive a little too fast and don't make complete stops at the stop signs.
In an effort to keep our students safe, please remember to drive the 15 mph speed limit while on campus and please make complete stops at both the entrance and exit stop signs. Also, please be mindful of the staff members directing traffic.

aftercare hours reminder
Parents, please be reminded that After - School Care is provided every day from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm for a fee of $15.00 per day or $200.00 for the month. We ask that parents pick up any remaining students by 6:00 pm, and no later, as the school closes at 6:00pm. Sometimes our Academic Teams will stay later, but these students are not considered to be in After-Care. There are also sometimes outside organizations that use our facility for sports events, so it may look like there are still plenty of people here, but these more often than not, do not include aftercare students. Thank you for your understanding.
Home Visits - A Fun Way to meet your teachers!
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
