Big Area Win for Varsity Girls!
Congratulations to our Varsity Lady Trojans on a 40-31 win over Bob Jones last night! The Huntsville Times Ladies Classic tips off Thursday afternoon at James Clemens and Bob Jones in Madison, and Hazel Green is the team to beat!
Our varsity girls aren't just incredible on the court! The team sponsored a "Kids To Love" foster child for this Christmas season, donating gifts to help make someone's Christmas a little brighter.
Alabama G.I. Dependents’ Scholarship
As of Fall 2009, children and stepchildren of qualified veterans may receive five standard academic years (10 semesters) at any Alabama state-supported institution of higher learning or a prescribed course of study at any state-supported technical school without payment of any tuition, mandatory textbooks or instructional fees.
The key eligibility requirements are:
- Service member lived in Alabama as a permanent resident for one year prior to enlisting in Alabama
- Service member had to have served honorably for at least 90 consecutive days
- Service member must be at least 20% disabled at time of discharge, or died as a result of military service.
Tuition, books, and admin fees are covered for up to 10 semesters.

Learning Community Fundraiser - The Learning Community will be selling Trojan Nation shirts January 5-16 to raise funds for community outings. Shirts are long-sleeve, Comfort Color. Shirts will be sold at $25 each, and will be in two to three weeks after final order is placed.
Speak Up Survey - We want your feedback! The Speak Up 2014 survey is a chance for you to tell us your ideas about how our school is using technology to improve teaching and learning. The data from the survey will be used to create the school technology plan. Please take a few minutes to complete it.

Enhland/Scotland Trip - Plans have changed! Although many of you expressed interest in the Istanbul to Athens trip that we announced back in August, we decided to stay a bit closer to home. With that in mind, we selected a more budget friendly trip scheduled for June 2016 to England and Scotland with a two-day extension to Paris. Take a look at www.eftours.com/1613404EA now. Yearbooks are on sale NOW and may be purchased at www.mySchoolFees.com. The last day to order yearbooks is January 15 and they will arrive before the end of school. Don’t be left out on Yearbook day in the spring!
Athletic Physicals - Huntsville Hospital Sports Center and TOC Sports are offering City Wide Physical Exams again on Saturday, January 10th from 8:00-10:00am at the D1 Sports Training Facility in Jones Valley. The cost is $10 per athlete.
HGHS Basketball Cheer Clinic - Saturday, January 10, 2015 from noon to 4:00pm at the Hazel Green High School Gym. All elementary and middle school girls are invited to attend! The clinic will focus on cheerleading technique and teach cheers. Best of all, the girls will perform with the basketball cheerleaders at the home game, Friday, January 16 at 6:00pm! Winter Coat Drive - First Priority will be doing a winter coat drive for the less fortunate until Christmas Break. Please bring coats, hats, gloves and scarves to Ms. Glenn’s office before or after school.
Winter Clothing Drive - The Math team is collecting warm winter clothing for the less fortunate. You can find drop off boxes in the attendance office and Coach Morrow's classroom.

Special Programs
Literary Arts Awards Competition - Alll interested students in Grades 9-12 are invited to submit their entries to the High School Literary Arts Awards (HSLAA) through January 12, 2015. Participating students may be eligible for awards and scholarships in the categories of poetry, short fiction, drama, creative nonfiction, portfolios, and literary magazines. Cash awards are available to high school seniors through the senior portfolio competition. Complete guidelines and entry forms are available on the Alabama Writers’ Forum Web site at www.writersforum.org.
National School Counseling Week Poster & Essay Contest - All entries should reflect the designated theme:
· Grades K-11: What are School Counselors and how do they help students? How have you been helped?
· Grade 12: How has a School Counselor helped guide you toward your future?
The state-level 1st place winner for 12th grade will receive a $1000 scholarship for post-secondary endeavors, sponsored by Alabama College and Career Guide (www.alccg.com). National Society of Black Engineers High School Essay Contest - The paper must address the topic of cyber security. With cyber threats in a state of rapid and continuous evolution, keeping pace in cyber security strategy and operation has become a major challenge. What is the significance or impact of cyber security in our daily lives? Authors of the top two essays will receive a monetary award in the amount of $150. Deadline is January 12, 2015. Huntsville Hospital Athlete of the Week - Applicants must be a high school senior, have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and display a history of athletic and academic accomplishments, as well as community/civic involvement. All weekly winners are invited to a banquet held in their honor in May, and two students are selected as Athletes of the Year. The two Athletes of the Year each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Trojan Daily Tips - All the newest information will be at the top, followed by our Athletic Schedules, Current Announcements, Senior Information and Permananent Announcements. Information from previous newsletters remains posted in Current Announcements until it expires. I welcome parents to send scores, pictures and updates from any Hazel Green sports or activities. We can't brag about it if we don't know about it. Scholarship and college visit information will only be posted once, and then it can be found on separate webpages for General Scholarships, College and University Scholarships, and School Visits and Special Programs.
Revision to Pre-Approved Absence Policy- Students requesting pre-approved, excused absences will need to turn the form in to Mrs. Sharp at least 20 days before the planned absence. Forms can be found on the school website.
Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend - Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.
1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.
2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.
3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.
Juniors Have Free Access to ACT Online Prep - All juniors received a personal user name and password to the ACT Online Prep website. This is a great resource to be used in preparing for the ACT Plus Writing assessment which will be given to all of our juniors during school. All students are strongly encouraged to utilize this service provided to us. For more information, visit http://www.actstudent.org/onlineprep/.
First Priority/FCS meets every Tuesday morning at 8:00 in the Choir Room. All students are welcome to attend.
Parenting Assistance Line: PAL is a service where anyone can call a toll free number 1-866-962-3030 and receive useful, practical information and assistance with developmental and parenting questions and concerns. Available 8:00am – 8:00pm (central time) Monday – Friday.
Recycle: Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.
Reward Cards: Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your reward cards when you visit Publix and Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you have them swipe your card, HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a reward card, just stop by the main office to pick one up.

Driver’s permit: Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.
