Coding with Drones
Tustin Public Schools Foundation Summer Academy - Module 2
We have had a fantastic two weeks during our summer drone program! We began with the Duct Tape Wallet challenge and our engineering notebooks. We focused on the Design Thinking Process, empathized with the needs of the user, defined the problem, brainstormed, developed/chose the best idea and built. Students improved upon the design as they went, and we took time to note the importance of the test and refine process.
Students were thrilled to get the controls in their hands and start flying through the obstacles on the first day!
After their experience in the air, we took time to learn about the different parts of a drone. They also learned language specific to flying drones and necessary for coding: pitch, yaw, roll, and throttle.
Partnerships use the Arduino platform to code their drones.
The students have done an outstanding job honing both flying and coding skills. Here are some examples of how amazing our pilots are! The first video demonstrates a student's flying skills and in the second a drone successfully completes seven coded "push ups" without the use of a remote.

We were fortunate enough to have two guest visitor's from TUSD's IT department visit our class. Chris and Hugo taught the students all about building and racing drones. The demonstration was spectacular and the students were able to have all of their questions answered by experts.
