Media Technology PD Day
Monday Oct. 26th, 2015
I. The evaluation instrument and you...
Kathy Parker, School Library Media Consultant - Division of Digital Teaching and Learning for DPI, will be joining us virtually to discuss the updated media coordinator and ITF appraisal instruments. We will be looking at the new standards, how to interpret them and how to easily develop a first-class portfolio to share during your evaluations. Part of this training will training will include collaborative focus groups and hands-on activities.
II. Creating a Collection Development Plan
You probably already know that school libraries are poorly underfunded. You probably also know that well staffed and well stocked libraries also correlate to higher student achievement. A well developed collection development plan helps school librarians advocate for greater funding. Standard III of the new instrument for media coordinators includes:
- Continuously evaluate the library media collection to ensure that it is accurate and current and meets teacher and student needs for recreational reading and curriculum-based materials in a variety of formats.
- Collaborate with members of the school community in assessing needs and using needs assessment information to inform the school’s collection development plan.
- Evaluate and select new resources based on the collection development plan.
- Exercise professional judgment in selecting resources that reflect the diverse developmental, cultural, social, and linguistic needs of students.
- Collaborate with local technical staff to ensure that digital resources are easily accessible and reliable.
Learn how to update your CDP or create a brand new one to share with stakeholders to advocate for your students and your school library program.
III. Making more of Destiny
So we've all been using Destiny for years, but there is more to it that just checking books in and out. Bob Rinaldi, Destiny expert from Follett, will be joining us for an in-depth look at how to use Destiny to collect information to make data driven decisions for your school library collection.
Up-to-date collection analysis reports will be provided for each school library collection. Use this data to get an accurate picture of your school's needs. Determine exactly what your needs are and what needs to be done to achieve an end goal.
Use this information in your collection development plan and provide administrators and stakeholders with the data they need to be able to adequately support the school library media program.
